Test 3 Recovery

Chapter 12 “Revolution and Romanticism”

1.       Identify an image from the book (artist, title, page number) other than Goya’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters that illustrates the Romantic period’s interest in the supernatural or demonic.  Briefly explain the relationship.  Compare it to the story in Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.  (5 pts)

2.       Identify an image from the book (artist, title, page number) other than Nash’s Royal Pavilion that can serve as an illustration of the Romantic interest in the ancient or exotic.  Are political or moral judgments implied in the work? (5 pts)

Chapter 11 “The Spirit of the Enlightenment”

3.       Briefly explain sonata form and compare it to your listening experience of piece in sonata form by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven.  (Do not use the Haydn or Mozart examples from the textbook CD – use ones from the reserve CDs.)  How does knowledge of the form organize (or fail to organize) your listening and how you follow the evolution of the piece?  How might your experience differ from that of a listener when the piece was new? (5 pts)

4.       Compare a Rococo painting to a Neo-Classical one.  What seems to be the artistic purpose or intent of each painting?  How do those attitudes reflect the spirit – or conflicting spirits – of their time?  (Cite artist, title & page number for each painting.) (5 pts)

Chapter 10 “The Spirit of Baroque”

5.       Compare a piece of Baroque music to a Baroque sculpture or painting.  What artistic qualities do they share?  How are they different?  (5 pts)

6.       Compare a piece of Classical music to a piece of Baroque music.  How are they different?  (For example, you might compare music from a Mozart opera to music from a Handel opera.)  (5 pts)

7.       Some art historians consider Rococo to be a separate period from that of Baroque; some consider Rococo to be a movement within the Baroque.  Explain the differences and similarities between a Baroque painting and a painting considered to be Rococo.  Identify the two works by artist, title & page number. (5 pts)

8.       The role of the ‘genius’ artist as social critic emerges in the early Romantic period.  Compare a Romantic model such as Beethoven with a composer or artist from an earlier period (Baroque or Enlightenment).  Mention specific works.  (5 pts)
