For those wanting to go online to save money on the texts, or borrow an older text from a friend:
We are using the text “Introductory Chemistry”, 6th edition by Zumdahl and Decoste.
The bookstore has the text bundled with the study guide = >$200
You do not need access to the online capability or a CD of additional information. Refer to my website for other online resources. The study guide is nice but not required (can be shared with other students)
The publisher offers this as an “e-book” for about $121 with the electronic study guide and solution guide. . There are restrictions (like it disappears after 6 months) and it’s not clear if the book can be put on more than one computer. But, you can access if through the website below:
CHEM 192 Zumdahl Introductory Chemistry, 006th edition
http://www.ichapters.com/market/isbn.html?isbn=0618803297&cid=D2S
This text is offered in three versions, all of which will work. They are “Introductory Chemistry; A Foundation (21 chapters), “Introductory Chemistry” (19 chapters) or “Basic Chemistry (16 chapters).
You also have the option of paperback or hardcover. The IBSN number for the paperback is 0-618-803-297, for the hard cover, it’s 0-618-803-327.
I’m seeing these online for $80 and up for new, less for used.
Second option: You are welcome to get a 5th edition, which is much less money. It’s ISBN 0-618-30499-1. There are the same versions as above. I will be listing homework out of the 5th edition as well. The biggest change is in chapter numbers. The 5th edition put energy in chapter 3, while the 6th edition gives it it’s own chapter 10. So, chapters 10 and beyond are numbered differently.
There are also older versions, but I have not correlated the homework problems. You can use older editions if you verify homework assignments out of the newer editions.
The lab book: You may not see “Introduction to Chemical Principles, A Laboratory Approach by S.A. Weiner, 6th edition (ISBN 0-534-40777-3) in used copies as the worksheets are “tearout pages”. If you do find a copy with the pages torn out, it’s still good for this class as I will be giving you the “tear out” pages as separate handouts. The Weiner book doesn’t go into enough detail. A likely place to find a used copy is with past Chem 192 students (ask in MESA).
You are also welcome to share a copy with other students.
The study guides: If possible, share with other students. There is a copy available in my office or on the library.
