Course Objectives and Expectations

This course is designed to be a undergraduate level overview of topics related to human sexuality. Using a biopsycholosocial perspective, we will consider human sexuality behavior as an interaction of physiological, psychological and sociocultural processes. We will review recent scientific advances in areas such as genetics, endocrinology, linguistics, information processing, and social psychology as they relate to our current understanding of human sexual practices.

We will use a research oriented approach to the study of human sexual behavior. Within this framework, opinions will be de-emphasized so that scientific data and facts can be presented and critically evaluated. This course will not cover "how to?" so much as it will encompass "how come?", "what function?", and "why?"

I anticipate that each of you will have your system of personal beliefs challenged at some point during the semester. In fact, it is my hope that the variety of opinions presented in this class will broaden all of our perspectives. This is my expectaion that beliefs and opinions will be expressed in a respectful and mature manner. It may be helpful to remember that what is acceptable to one person is anathema to another. Because of this, there will be a heavy emphasis on scientific data as compared to personal opinion in our classroom discussion.

Attendance:

You should know that I have zero tolerance for unexcused absences or tardiness. Every student is expected to be in class on time for every scheduled class session. Your participation is a vital part of the class experience. If you are not in class, both you and your classmates miss the opportunity to gain from your experience. If you are too sick to come to class you should inform me that you will be absent BEFORE the class session that you will miss. You can do this by e-mailing me a lowell@smccd.net.

The following is a PARTIAL list of UNACCEPTABLE reasons for tardiness or absence:

  • I have an appointment.
  • I have to work.
  • I have an admission's interview for another college.
  • I got locked out of my apartment.
  • I couldn't find my car keys.
  • I couldn't get a parking spot.
  • My alarm/roommate/friend did not wake me up.
  • Traffic was bad.
  • I was having one of those days so I went back to bed.

Students' who do not respect this attendance policy can expect to have their final grades docked. If you think this view is too restrictive or unreasonable, have another class that will make you late, or simply don't believe me, you should
 take this class another semester.

Roll Sheets will be passed in the first five minutes of each class period. Each student to SIGN THEIR OWN  INITIALS ONLY! If you sign another students name, for what ever reason, that student will be deducted for one week of attendance points. Each day students will earn 3 points. That is 9 points per week, times 18 weeks. Just do the math!
