WEEK 1

T 1/20: Introduction to Reading 836. Group work: getting to know each other and Skyline College.
HW: 1) Purchase books and Supplemental Materials Packet.
2) Complete the “Hi! Help Me Get to Know You” form, Supplements (SUPP), 1 - 2
3) Read pages 15 - 22, SUPP.
4) Bring transparency pens as well as your books, notebooks, and a planner on Thursday.

HW: 1) Complete the study schedule.
2) Read pages 1 - 17, BTG (Bridging the Gap). Some of this will review Tuesdays SUPP homework.
3) BTG, pages 23 - 31, “Superman and Me”. Start by doing the Skill Development work on page 23 - 24. Record your starting time before you start reading the selection-page 24. Read the selection. Calculate your total reading time-page 27. Answer the “Check Your Comprehension” and ”Build Your Vocabulary” questions on pages 28 - 31. Record the time to do the questions in the Skill Development section, page 30.
Extra credit possibility: pps. 48 - 56 “Keeping Kids Off the Juice” -up to 10 points.
Submit responses on paper or tear out/photocopy pages from the text.

WEEK 2

T 1/27: SUBMIT STUDY SCHEDULE
Discuss homework reading selection
Vocabulary development strategies: context clues, word structure, remembering.
HW: 1) Read the instructional material of Chapter 2, BTG, Vocabulary, pages 55 - 64.
2) Do Exercise 2.2, pages 65 - 67 TWICE. The first time, without reading the sentences,
select a, b, c, or d as a response. The second time, read the sentence and choose your
response (it may be different from your first idea).
3) Continue reading in Chapter 2, SKIPPING THE EXERCISES: pages 73 - 75 (Structure of Words), 77 - 78, (Dictionary), 82 - 83 (Glossary), 83 - 84 (Thesaurus), 85 - 86 (Analogies), 88 (Easily Confused Words), 89 (Acronyms) and 90 (Transitional Words).
4) Fill in the Word Parts Grid (a new handout sheet) for pages 92 - 93.

Introduction to the Newsweek portfolio
Introduction to Chapter 3, BTG, Strategic Reading
HW: 1) Newsweek as assigned in class (will be put on the website), including “Weird Word” section of portfolio. Use SUPP response sheet 101 - 102. Your Assigned article is "A Fence Can't Stop the Future" from Newsweek.com. Download and print this article.
2) BTG Chapter 3: Preview and then read pages 97 - 103. Do Exercises 3.1 and 3.2.
3) Complete your study schedules with additions and corrections indicated on your returned schedule. If you are behind in this assignment and other homework, get caught up! The late ticket policy goes into effect beginning with next Tuesdays's homework.

WEEK 3

T 2/3: SUBMIT NEWSEEK RESPONSE SHEET
Continue Chapter 3 activities-Stages 2 and 3 of reading
Introduce The Kite Runner (KR). Use KWL+ sheet from SUPP
HW: KR, pages 1 - 47 and Activity #1, SUPP 67 - 68. Do the Reading Guide questions; use the questions to help underline and write margin notes in the text.

TH 2/5 The Kite Runner discussion and/or group work. SUBMIT RESPONSE SHEETS.
HW: 1) “Security Blanket” by Graeme Wood, www.theatlantic.com. This is the online version of The Atlantic Monthly. (The article is also available on pages 24 -
25 in the January/February printed version of the magazine). Use the same response sheet as last week: pages 101 - 102, SUPP and do your two "Weird Words"
2) 5 vocabulary cards with words chosen from KR (will be listed on the Announcements page of the website each week). Use SUPP 123 - 124 for instructions and a model for doing the cards.

Reading 836 TTH class Final Exam: Thursday, May 28th, 11:10 - 1:40

The final exam will consist of two parts:

1) The test on BTG, Chapter 7 and 8-ONE PAGE OF NOTES, ONE SIDE, ALLOWED:
-----Terminology and application of skills-inference, connotation, denotation, various types of figurative language, fact/opinion, point of view, purpose, tone
-----Word parts from all of the grids (NOTES NOT ALLOWED ON THIS--DO THE MEMORY WORK)
-----Thomas Friedman's "Swimming Without a Suit" opinion piece from the New York Times and “What is the Quarterlife Crises? in BTG page 449 - 456

2) Two reading selections that you have not seen before, one fiction and one non-fiction. You will be expected to prepare the selections ahead of time--dictionary work, annotations, coming to an understanding of these selections. On the day of the test, you may use your prepared selections and additional prepared notes and submit them with the test. They count for 5% of the grade.

SUBMIT PORTFOLIOS AND REMAINING EXTRA CREDIT WORK.





You will receive printed assignment sheets every two to three weeks that will list day-to-day activities and homework. Updates to these assignment sheets will be announced in class and posted on the Announcement and Assignment web pages for this class. Especially if you are absent, be sure to check the web site or contact the instructor or a classmate for homework changes. Remember that you are responsible for homework deadlines even if you are absent. Other changes to the course requirements will be announced in a similar fashion.
