You will receive hard copies of your assignment sheets every two to three weeks in class. Changes made will be reflected in red on the web version of the assignment sheet below.

WEEK 1

TH 8/20: Introduction to Reading 826
Getting to know each other
HW: 1) Buy your books and materials
2) Complete "Hi. Help Me Get to Know You" profile form-pages 1 -2, 826 Supplement (SUPP)
3) Read Breaking Through (BT), pages 2 - 5
4) On a separate sheet (not in the book) or using photocopies, fill out “Personal Feedback 1” (page 3) and ”Personal Feedback 2” (page 6), BT.
5) Bring your planner/calendar to class next Tuesday and every class day

WEEK 2

T 8/25: SUBMIT 3 HOMEWORK ACTIVITIES
Goal-setting and planning: schedules, to-do lists, and calendars
HW: 1) Read/Review BT, pages 7 - 10 and SUPP 9 - 15
2) Complete "Weekly Time Chart,” page 10, BT or page 13, SUPP
3) Read "Act Successful," pages 13 - 19, BT and also pages 5 - 8, SUPP. (Skip written activities)
4) Write your “Educational Autobiography,” SUPP, page 3. Pay most attention to describing and evaluating yourself as a student. Specifically respond to the following questions:
*What effective strategies do you already use?
*Where are you weak or ineffective in your study strategies?
*What will you do to improve?
Be sure to write in paragraph or short essay format--1 - 1 1/2 pages (typing appreciated, but not required).

2) Get ready for reading Warriors Don’t Cry (WDC) by doing the following:
*Read page 54 SUPP, about the Supreme Court decision: “Brown V. Board of Education”
*Preview the book by reading/examining the front and back covers, the photographs, and other introductory material, pages xiii - xviii, WDC.
3) Fill out the Time Chart on page 10 in BT with your classes, fixed activities, and study times as you do them. This is your actual use of time, not a plan.

We will do the rest of the activities in class, for this is a new approach to the Activity Sheets, to coincide with Chapter 4 in BT.d over. Write them down. Self-test.

READING 826AB FINAL EXAMINATION: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15TH, 11:10 – 1:40

The final exam is based on two new reading selections that will be assigned on the last day of class, December 10th. You will prepare these selections using all the skills we’ve worked with this semester (Chapters 1 – 5 in Breaking Through) and will be allowed to use the selections as you take the test. You will submit your prepared materials as part of the grade for the exam.

Also due by the Final Exam Date: all remaining extra credit work

Grades will be available on WebSmart in early January. If you want the breakdown of your grade, you can e-mail your instructor after January 5th: lindgren@smccd.edu
