How does this class work?

This course begins with an orientation to show you how to navigate through the courseware. Homework assignments are done online through the courseware. Other assignments can be submitted through the courseware, by fax, or in the Learning Center. Exams are taken on campus and the dates are tentatively set to about 1/3 and 2/3 of the term for the two exams and the last week of the term for the final exam (more exact dates are on the schedule in the courseware). Most of the learning/instruction happens through the different resources available in the courseware: multimedia textbook, videos, animations, powerpoint presentations, tutoring help, etc... The instructor may also have office hours and review session. Finally, the Math Lab has an excellent drop-in tutor, Nancy Ward, who has worked with students in statistics, as well as many other math courses. Periodic assessments will check student learning.

What is the courseware (course management system) being used for this class?

The courseware is called CourseCompass (http://www.coursecompass.com), powered by Blackboard. You will use course compass to navigate through announcements, assignments, etc... Within coursecompass is a math program supplied by the book?s publisher called MyMathLab. This is the portion of the courseware that generates the homework assignments and gives the feedback for your progress. It is important to be able to navigate through this courseware within the first week or so (first few days if taken over the summer) so that you can keep up with the early deadlines.

Is the orientation mandatory?

Yes! This is the only opportunity to meet face to face. This is also the time when the courseware can be demonstrated and expectations are discussed. If you cannot make the orientation, you need to try to make an appointment with the instructor within the next few days. Otherwise you will not be able to enroll in the class and/or will be dropped from the roster.

Is this class fully online or do we have to come to campus for certain things?

No. Unfortunately, we still need to have proctored exams to ensure that you are the one who is getting tested for your progress and accomplishments in this class. Because of this reason, you will need to come to campus to take exams. Also, the orientation is mandatory.

Will there be class meetings?

No. You are expected to learn the material through the courseware. There may be office hours (in person and/or online) and math lab hours where you can ask questions about the material. You may also email the instructor through the courseware for specific questions about assignments you are working on. Aside from that, the courseware provides many resources that address many different learning styles - all you need is your own motivation.

Is this class self paced/flexible?

This class is NOT self-paced. There are deadlines to meet and we move along the course as if it was a regular class.

How long does this class last?

This information can be found in websmart (http://websmart.smccd.net)

Is this online course transferable?

This course is the same as the regular statistics course taught in this college. The course transfers to most universities. To be sure about transferability, ask a counselor.

What do I do to sign up?

There are two places you need to sign up. First is through websmart (http://websmart.smccd.net); this ensures that you are actually signed up for this course. If the class is ?full,? you can probably still sign up by attending the mandatory orientation and obtaining an authorization code. Next is to sign up in CourseCompass (http://www.coursecompass.com); this will allow you to work on the assigned work for this class.

Are there prerequisites? Do I need to take the placement test?

The prerequisites for this class is Math 120, Intermediate Algebra. You may also enroll if you have completed an equivalent course or have scored appropriately on the placement exam. So if you have not taken Math 120, cannot prove that you have completed an intermediate algebra course, or have taken the course a long time ago that you don?t seem to remember the math, it may be a good idea to take the placement exam to try to place into this class.

If the class is full, can I still get in?

Yes. Just show up for the mandatory orientation for an authorization code. (Note: the code still won?t work if you have not satisfied the prerequisite requirement

What book do you recommend me to buy?

The book used for this class is called Essentials of Statistics, 2nd, by Mario Triola. However, the entire book is available online, so you have options.
If you want (and are able) to read the book online, you may simply purchase the online (courseware) code and access the online book; you can do this via the bookstore or online (http://www.coursecompass.com). If you feel it necessary to have the book, the bookstore has a package for the online class that contains the book and the code for the courseware.

What other technologies are needed?

You should have a computer with a reasonably fast internet connection to be able to access the courseware. If you don?t have this resource at home, there are computers available in the learning center. You should also have a calculator to do the homework and to bring to the exams. The class supports TI-83 and TI-84. Excel and other statistical software would also be useful.

How many hours do I need to put into this class?

Do you have an idea of when the test days might be scheduled for?
