Homework for Wed. May 21:  Jour 120:  Production #8 is Wednesday night.  Last day to turn in late work.  Please also type up four exam questions for our final.
Jour 121:  Your data-driven article is due at the BEGINNING of class, excluding the Excel graphic.

Past Homework:  Please read pp. 135-149 on law and ethics, and prepare for an open-note quiz.Jour 120: Style worksheet exercise.  Please post a blog entry in which you link to a narrated slideshow and critique it.
Jour 121
:   Google your basic blog theme and the words “database” and then “statistics” to find what databases or statistical sites are out there that deal with that them.  Then, post a blog that summarizes your findings and includes about five links to different sites.
Please bring in your outline or draft in preparation for finishing a final draft of the cell phone feature story.  Here is the exercise we did in class today.  We’re meeting in class first.
Read pp. 116-119 on feature writing and prepare for open-note quiz.
Jour 120:
1) Bring in your accident report and notes, and 2) do this style worksheet exercise. Jour 121:    1) Please bring in your court record and your notes and 2) fill out this beat sheet..  (Please fill out both, one for the View and one for me.)
121 for 4-16:
Post a blog entry.  For this one, either refute or defend some controversial aspect of your blog theme.  Include at least one link.
Please bring in final draft of the police news conference story we started in the lab on Friday.
Go to www.jacconline.org and look for the City Council simulation link on the left hand side as you scroll down.  The full story will be due on Friday.
Meeting article.  Some tips:  Remember to focus on one main action/issue from the school board meeting.  Then, you can (and should) mention other action taken at the meeting by saying something like, “In other action, the board voted to:” followed by bulleted items.  Don’t forget to format this like a real article, using a slug and –30—a the end, etc. Please also double space.
Jour 120:
Blog entry: Respond to this prompt:  Is it okay to clean up a source’s quote for poor grammar or should you only run quotes verbatim (word for word what they said)?  Explain and support your answer.     Jour 121:  Blog entry prompt:  Write an entry in which you identify and include links to other blogs (or blog entries) that cover a topic similar to yours or diametrically opposed to yours.    I’ve already done a Google search for each of your blog topics and each of you is part of a blog community covering similar issues.  Try your own Google search and see what you come up with!  Jour 121, please download this Unit #1 schedule for Journalism 121, if you don’t already have it.

Jour 121:
Post your next blog entry, including two links in it.  Jour 120:  Do Tim Harrower’s exercise 3-3.3 and email it to me. When you get to his site, go to student edition, chapter #3 and find the specific exercise.  We did 3-3.2 on Wednesday in class, if you want to make it up.
Jour 121:
You will be conducting an interview during our class on Wednesday, using this sheet as a guide. You will check in with me at 10:10 and then leave for your in-person or phone interview scheduled for 10:20.  To get an A on this exercise, you will have a pre-arranged interview set up.  If you absolutely can’t confirm an interview with someone, you will need to come in with a TYPED list of 10-15 people (and their phone numbers) you can call during the 40-minute period I’m giving you to do this. Put yourself in the mindset of a working reporter for this.
Jour 120:
Please do Style Worksheet #1, using pp. 54-55 in our textbook to help you.
Jour 121:  Here are the audio clips for Jour 121 for Flood Story #3:
Roger Craig, chair of the Citizens Against Flood Tax
Councilmember Janice Ricardios
Jour 120:
Please type this Special Leads Exercise #1
Jour 121:  Here are the three “interviews” you did for your story:
Interview #1
Interview #2
Interview #3
Directions:  Listen carefully for them for the nut graf and any story that could work for your narrative lead.  After listening to the interviews, write a narrative lead and nut graf.  You will have 3-5 paragraphs of writing, typed. Watch for accuracy.
Jour 120: Please find a anecdotal/narrative lead from any online newspaper or magazine.
1) Posted it in quotes or italics to your blog.
2) Link it to the original spot you saw it published.
3) Critique it:  Why did the writer use a narrative lead here instead of a summary lead?
4) Post the nut graf and label it as such.
*Make sure you cite your source, so that it doesn’t look like the lead is YOUR writing.
Jour 121:  Please do Broadcast Writing Exercise #2; this must be typed.
Jour 120: Read the profile written about you by your classmate.  Post a blog entry detailing how it felt to have someone publish something about you.  Also, address in your blog the extent to which the information was accurate.  (See right for blog links.) Jour 121:  Please post blog entry #2.  Your entry should include two links to other sources that add some authority to your topic.
Lead Exercise #2.
1) Read pp. 40-43 on lead writing, 2) prepare for an open-note quiz (you can bring in any written notes on the reading that you would like and use the notes as a “cheat sheet.”), and 3) complete Lead Exercise #1 and bring it to class.
Please post the profile of your classmate to your blog by 9 a.m.  These profiles should be no more than 300 words and should contain at least two direct quotes.
Please read pp. 16-17 in Inside Reporting. Then, fill out this exercise and bring it to class.
