The significance of the documentary Brothers

The examination of male relationships is often overlooked by the media. Mother – daughter, sister-sister, and every other female combination under the sun have been at the forefront of books, films, etc. But how often do we hear about male relationships particularly between brothers?

Throughout my childhood my brother Bernard was probably the most influential person I knew. So I asked myself why aren
’t there more channels that speak of the relationship between brothers? When has an open dialogue of brothers had a voice? Since when have guys had a forum to reflect and think about their childhood and adulthood as it relates to their brothers?

The concept for Brothers was born at the same time my second nephew Eben was born. I began to wonder how Eben and his older brother Taigen would get along. Would their childhood relationship be similar that of me and Bernard? How will our upbringing influence Taigen and Eben? How will I influence Taigen and Eben? I decided that I wanted to learn about other brother relationships and use my relationship with Bernard to gain insight and foreshadow Taigen and Eben’s brotherhood. Just as my nephew’s birth prompted me to reflect on my relationship with Bernard I want those who watch this documentary to reflect on their relationship with their siblings. the person that they are today.
