ADDITIONAL POLICIES

Laboratory Policies

It is expected that all students will follow standard lab safety protocols. Of particular importance in an anatomy lab are the following:

  • Food and drink are not allowed in the lab.
  • Absolutely no photography is allowed.
  • All lab materials, including bones and atlases, must remain in the lab.
  • Visitors are not allowed without special instructor permission.

Attendance

Attendance in both the lab and lecture is required. Failure to attend any class meeting time during the first two weeks of the semester will result in the student being dropped from the course. After the second week, three or more consecutive unexcused absences may result in the student being dropped from the course

Student Records of Completed Work

Students are responsible to keep copies of their own work products (quizzes, etc). Exams must remain in the instructor's possession but are available upon request for students to review. Exams are kept on file for one month after the end of the semester; after that time they will be destroyed.

Grading Scheme

The grading system for the course is as follows: A 90-100%, B 80-89%, C 70-79%, D 60-69%, and F below 60%. Scores are not curved in this course and extra credit is not available.

In order to pass this course you must earn at least 60% of the cumulative Lecture Exam points and 60% of the cumulative Lab Practical points. Students who fail to do so will not pass the course regardless of their scores on assignments, quizzes, or lab workbook.

The following distribution is tentative and subject to change if circumstances warrant in order to provide a more accurate representation of the work actually assigned during the semester.

You may find out your scores at any time during the semester by visiting the Front Page of this web site. Since the category weights may change at the end of the semester (to more accurately reflect the work actually assigned), students should use these reports primarily to verify their scores and are urged to consider their "Overall Grade" as a tentative estimate.

Failing Grades

Please know that I DO want you to succeed in this course. Therefore, if at any time during the semester you receive a failing score (<60%) on an assignment or exam, you should meet with me (preferably within 1 week). In our meeting we will try to discover what went wrong and what we can do to help you improve. Please, don't give up without a fight! Give me a chance to help.

Withdrawal from the Course

While I do not like to see any of my students withdraw from the course, I do realize that legitimate reasons do arise throughout the semester. In all cases, the College requires all withdrawals to be filed no later than the date specified in the Schedule of Classes. After this date, if you do not complete the course you will receive an F on your record. It is the student's responsibility to file for a W!

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty consists of copying from someone else, copying from the Internet, using crib notes on exams, or handing in written reports that do not represent your own work. Any student turning in an assignment overly similar to that of another student or another author, or found committing academic dishonesty of any other type will receive a failing grade for the assignment, and a report of the incident filed with the appropriate college authorities. Subsequent infractions may result in the student being dismissed from the class with a failing grade. For more information, see Cañada's Academic Integrity Policy, available on the college website.

Disabilities and Acceptable Course Conflicts

I will gladly accommodate students with physical or learning disabilities. If you have such a disability and are registered with DSPS, please contact me as early in the semester as possible. If you are an observant member of a religion that has a holiday that conflicts with a course requirement, please see me as early as possible to make alternative arrangements. Qualified students with physical or documented learning disabilities have the right to free accommodations to ensure equal access to educational opportunities at Cañada College.

Student Feedback

I need to hear from you about the success or failure of any aspect of this course. Please provide your criticisms, praise, or suggestions via my mailbox, office hours, e-mail, or anonymous note.
