PREREQUISITE & RECOMMENDATIONS:
CAOT 100 or equivalent; ability to type without looking at the keyboard

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
CAOT 101 OL, Computer Keyboarding Skill Building: CRN 88247 Units: 1.5/3.0 Hours: 24 – 48 lecture hours plus 16 to 32 lab hours by arrangement. This course is designed to improve a student’s ability to type rapidly and accurately for sustained periods of time without looking at the keyboard. Students may also use the course to improve typing speed and accuracy. May be repeated for credit up to a maximum of 6 units. Transfer credit: CSU

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
• improve their keyboarding skills focusing on concentration and technique
• attain an increase in speed and accuracy by a minimum of 7 WPM through prescribed drills and timed writings

The book and program CD may be purchased at the Skyline College Bookstore This kit is required

Hardware:
To use the Cortez Peters' Championship Keyboarding Drills software your system must meet the following minimum requirements:
• PC with a Pentium II CPU or higher
• 16 MB RAM required for Windows 98 systems
• 32 MB RAM required for Windows NT/2000/ME systems
• 128 MB RAM required for Windows XP systems
• 1.44 MB floppy disk drive (1.44 MB floppy disk recommended for saving assignments)
• Mouse or other pointer device
• Hard disk drive with 100 MB of free space
• SVGA color monitor
• Graphics Adaptor, SVGA or higher
• CD-ROM drive (8X or faster)
• Modem
• Windows ME/98/NT/2000/XP MAPI-compatible email program

Software:
• Software is included in the Cortez Peters' Book and CD package. Directions are also included for installing the program on your computer.
• A virus protection program loaded and running on your computer such as McAfee or Norton Anti Virus is desirable
• An Internet connection and an e-mail program.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments are due on a weekly basis. Submit ONLY assignments listed in the Homework to Submit By Email. The practice assignments are for you to do on your own. If you are enrolling in the course for 1.5 units your assignments will be Cycle one to Cycle five. If you are enrolling for 3.0 units, continue with cycles 6 – 10. Click on the following link Skillbuilding II for additional assignments. Send all your homework to me as an attachment to gianoli@smccd.edu. Complete the entire Lesson before emailing the files as an attachment. There are viruses that you may not be aware of that have the ability to attach to your email address list. Because this can happen, please use the following in the Subject line: last name, CAOT 101-Report number.
Example: gianoli, CAOT 101-Report 1.
If there is no class, name or assignment number, I will not accept the work. If there is another reference in the subject line such as Hi, Hello, Help, What's new, Work, etc. or if the subject line is blank, I will not open the email, it will be deleted, and you will not get credit for the assignment.
Typical assignments may include.
• Daily Warm-up Drills
• Daily 5-minute warm-up drills of computer keyboard keys focusing on different rows or a combination of rows to help with concentration and recollection of keyboard touch typing techniques.
• Weekly Pretest/Posttest 5-Minute Timings/Diagnostic Sentences
• A cycle approach is used by students taking a 5-minute timing to determine speed and accuracy. Based on the results, corrective practice or accuracy drills are prescribed to remedy problems in accuracy and speed. When drills are completed, a 5-minute posttest timing is given taken by the student for comparison. The results are printed in text and report form for analysis by instructor and student.
• Weekly Corrective Practice
• A minimum of one hour outside of class corrective practice drills is required to increase speed goal of seven words per minute.
• Rhythmic Development Tapes
• Supplemental tapes may be used in the lab or outside of class to enhance drills for speed, accuracy and skillbuilding

GRADING POLICY:
This is a Credit/No Credit class. There will not be a letter grade for this class. Credit for 1.5 units is based on the following.
65% Cycles 1 - 5
15% Lab
10% Class Meeting Attendance
10% Discussion Board Participation
Evaluation of student performance may include:
• Class participation
• 5-minute timings
• Completion of required in class and outside lab corrective practices
• Weekly Diagnostic evaluation
• Achievement of set goal of a minimum of 7 net words per minute increase for each 1.5 units

Please refer to the Skyline College Catalog, pages 28-29, for a complete discussion of Academic Integrity. The two most common kinds of academic dishonesty are: cheating and plagiarism. Any student who is caught obtaining or attempting to obtain academic work through the use of dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent acts may be dropped from the class and issued a grade of No Credit. Please refer to these pages to make sure you understand all the examples of what may be considered academic dishonesty.

CLASS FORMAT:
A skill building keyboarding class taught entirely on the web. You will be using Cortez Peters' Championship Keyboarding Drills software to improve keyboarding techniques and to increase your speed and accuracy skill in keyboarding. You will work through a series of timings and corrective drills. All the assignments are from the required textbook or the instructor and will be posted on the web site along with links to course lecture notes.
• all beepers and phones must be mute during instruction
• no food or drinks are allowed in the lab

CLASS PARTICIPATION:
This class will have a discussion page. http://www.smccd.edu/forums/gianoli Students are encouraged to use this page and communicate with the instructor and fellow classmates. The instructor is part of the group and will answer all questions. If students are having problems that they cannot solve please email the instructor at gianoli@smccd.edu to receive help There will be three classroom meetings at Skyline College in the CAOT Lab in Building 8, Room 8119 during each session. These meetings are required and include an orientation August 19, an assessment of progress on September 16, and a Final on October 14 if you are enrolled for 1.5 units. If you have enrolled for 3.0 units or the second eight week session, the orientation will be held on October 21, the assessment of progress meeting will be on November 18, and the Final meeting on December 9. These meetings will be held in room 8119 at 7:00 pm. Failure to attend these meetings will result in loss of points and/or being dropped from the class

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:
Withdrawal from a class must be initiated by the student using WebSmart, or in-person at the Office of Admissions and Records. Please refer to Skyline College procedures for dropping this or any course listed on page 27 of the Skyline College Catalog.

LAB AVAILABILITY:
Assignments may be completed in the Skyline CAOT labs which are located in Building 8, Rooms 8119 and 8121, or wherever you have access to Gregg Keyboarding for Windows 10th edition. If you need help, check with the CAOT Instructional Aides. The open lab hours are posted on the classroom doors of Rooms 8119 and 8121. RESOURCES:
The second session of the CAOT 100 and CAOT 101 classes begins October 21, 2008. Orientation will be October 21, 2008 in room 8119 at 7:00 p.m. This is a required meeting and very important to your success in our online classes. Everyone needs to do their part in taking an active role and participate by posting messages and questions to the Discussion Board. It is important that you have virus protection on your systems. I have provided links in the External Link Section to both McAfee and Norton web sites where you can read more about viruses and download either the program or the program updates. Remember your virus protection is only as good as your updates. Virus protection should be updated every month.
