  • Explore "The Man to Send Rainclouds" as a socio-cultural piece
  • Finish Essay #1 Final Draft--Due Wednesday, 9/30. (Staple all items--title page, minimum 4 page final draft plus Work Cited page, 1st draft, 2 feedback sheets. Please do not use folders to hand in essays.)

  • Essay final drafts should represent your best work--publishable, finely tuned, "perfect" essays.  Only YOU can make this happen (NOT your computer or anyone else).  Go to the Writing Lab or Basic Skills Lab for assistance with composition and grammar skills.

  • Reread A Little Literature, pp. 248-255, “The Lesson”
September 30
  • DUE--Essay #1 Final Draft Packet (all items stapled—title page, minimum 4 page final draft w/Work Cited page, 1st draft, 2 feedback sheets)

  • Discuss “The Lesson” as socio-economic commentary
  • Read A Little Literature, pp. 271-284, "The Yellow Wallpaper"

  • Reminder: Continue to write your weekly short story journals.  (Journal Batch #2 will be collected on the day of the midterm exam, 10/14.  You will have 4 journals in that batch for Weeks 5,6,7,8.)

  • Begin to study and prepare for your midterm exam--Midterm exam is on Wednesday, 10/14. No make-ups will be allowed unless there are verifiable special circumstances.  Special arrangements must be made at least 3 days prior to the exam.
October 7
  • Discuss “Battle Royal” from a sociological and socio-political perspective

  • In-class activiites
  • Due Monday, 10/12--Do a little research on Kate Chopin--her background, where she lived, the historical period during which she wrote, etc. Use at least 2 sources.  Type (briefly) what you discover to be 5 of the most interesting (unique) quick facts that you'd be able to share with your peers in 5 minutes (1 fact per minute) and cite your sources.  Go beyond basic, biographical information so that you have facts that shed light on the culture, history, and people of her time.  Be ready to share this information with your classmates in a group activity. (10 points)

  • Begin reading Kate Chopin's novel, The Awakening.  Finish reading the entire novel by Monday, Oct. 19.
