CAMPUS IMPACT: |
|
As noticed today by some on campus, the roofing process causes an asphalt odor that the wind can direct to surrounding areas. This is very unpredictable as it is dependent upon the wind.
Please pardon the inconvenience while this roofing work is completed for the new Library/Student Resource Center. It is important for the roof to be installed now before any rains occur, to protect the new building. Thus it is not possible to delay the roofing to the next break in December.
The asphalt roofing material smell can be a nuisance as the smell is unpleasant, but at the levels of airborne asphalt exposure that may temporarily exist around campus, it is not harmful. The installation roofing asphalt tank has been placed to the east side of Building 9 towards parking lot 1 in an effort to keep the smell away from the rest of the campus. However it is not possible to completely control how the wind may blow the smell.
It is recommended to keep surrounding office windows closed during the roofing operation. As needed, Facilities will turn off air intake fans in buildings so that the smell is not drawn into buildings. This was done at Bldg 5/6/8 today and did help to stop the smell from entering the building. The Facilities Department is responding as required, depending on weather conditions. Keep us informed about conditions in buildings, so adjustments may be made to ventilation systems.
