Subject: RE: Construction Notice - Replacement of HVAC Units - Building 5 Rooftop (Update #2)
Folks – just got this breaking news – the units will not be available until January 4, again due to some manufacturing problems. This means - - -
- [DONE – stays as stated] All four of the Building 5 air conditioning units will be shut down and disconnected on Thursday, December 22. This means no heat, no cooling, and no air circulation throughout Building 5. No prognosis on when all four units will be fully up and running again, and worse casing, could last until January 14. Hopefully, we will be successful in getting one or two of the four units up and running by the end of 1st week in January, which will provide some heating and air circulation on both floors of Building 5.
- [CHANGE] Building 5 will be closed on
January 3 and January 4, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. CHANGE to January 4 and January 5, from 7 a.m. to 2 pm, on both days. This is necessary because a crane will be lifting off the four units and replacing them with brand new units. We don’t want anyone in the building during these two crane operations.
- [CHANGE] Staff Parking Lot 6 will be closed for vehicle parking on
January 3 and January 4 CHANGE to January 4 and January 5 to make room for the crane operation and staging area for construction equipment. The Building 5 loading dock area will also have to be closed these two days.
- [DONE – stays as stated] The walkway along the front of Building 5 from Staff Parking Lot 6 will be closed from December 21 to January 14. You can gain access into the front of Building 5 from the Staff Parking Lot 6 direction by walking around the back of Building 5, past the Bookstore, and using the walkway from Building 2.
I apologize for the inconvenience and ‘jockeying’ with this schedule. Everyone has been extra-tolerant and we’ll hopefully get underway as currently planned. Having said that, please stay tuned for any other possible changes.
Thanks -

Subject: Construction Notice - Replacement of HVAC Units - Building 5 Rooftop (Update)

Hi everyone – the work on the roof of Building 5 to replace four large air conditioning and heating units had to be adjusted due to some manufacturing problems. It’s ‘on again’ – and the initial phases will begin at the end of next week. Please open up the attached file picture (Winter Break B 5 Work) - because it will add clarity to the events and impacts I am going to attempt to describe -
- All four of the Building 5 air conditioning units will be shut down and disconnected on Thursday, December 22. This means no heat, no cooling, and no air circulation throughout Building 5. No prognosis on when all four units will be fully up and running again, and worse casing, could last until January 14. - Staff Parking Lot 6 will be closed for vehicle parking on January 3 and January 4 to make room for the crane operation and staging area for construction equipment. The Building 5 loading dock area will also have to be closed those two days.

You can gain access into the front of Building 5 from the Staff Parking Lot 6 direction by walking around the back of Building 5, past the Bookstore, and using the walkway from Building 2.
All of these dates will be affected by weather and subject to ‘slipping back’ - - I’ll keep everyone posted of any changes.
The other two attached files are pictures illustrating the condition of the units on the roof and why they have to be replaced as soon as possible. Those two pictures were taken in May 2004 and the corrosion of the units has worsened considerably more. All those brown pieces of shavings you see scattered around are the metal components of the system deteriorating and rusting away due to the salt-fog conditions we live in up here.
Our Swinerton Team will be making sure there are appropriate construction signage posted, that there are barricades out to cordon the areas affected, that space heaters are made available for those of you working in Building 5, and that we have a safe operation taking place at all times during this important project period for Building 5.
Thanks –
Richard
