Ribbon-cutting ceremony September 21
College of San Mateo’s Building 18 modernized, seismically retrofitted
San Mateo, CA; September 14, 2005— The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly-renovated three-story, 3,000-square foot Building 18 at College of San Mateo will be held on Wednesday, September 21. The campus event will begin at 1:30 pm at the second floor colonnade on the building’s east side. Open to the public, the festivities will feature the ceremony; a tour of the building, particularly the technologically "SMART" classrooms and the Language Arts Division’s labs and centers; and refreshments.
The building has undergone a complete seismic retrofit, including foundation underpinning, new concrete foundations, shear walls and strengthened connections.  The modernization has brought the structure up to current accessibility, mechanical, electrical, fire and plumbing code compliance. Additionally, it now has new furniture, fixtures and equipment. 
 
Building 18’s significant improvements will create a facility conducive to modern and future academic methodology, directly supporting general lecture classrooms, “SMART” classrooms, the Language Arts Division’s general lecture and laboratory spaces and the Faculty Center.

A “SMART” classroom is designed for enhanced learning, with laptop computer accessibility, wireless Internet connection and computer projection and sound systems available to faculty for presentations.

In November 2001 San Mateo County voters passed Measure C, a $207 million bond measure for community college facility improvement. CSM is receiving a percentage of that amount. Those dollars, along with funding from redevelopment agencies, the state and donations, are being applied to several projects. Some have already been completed, such as upgrades to CSM’s infrastructure (water, sewer, power and data); improvements to the College’s child development center and Choral Room; abatement of hazardous materials; upgrades to parking lots and sidewalks; and, paid for by redevelopment agencies, installation of new football and baseball fields. Other projects are under construction, including CSM’s new Science Building, planetarium and observatory, which will be completed early next year. Other projects underway include the construction of the Regional Public Safety Center and the seismic upgrading and modernization of campus buildings 1, 5 and 6.
