Subject: FW: Canada CIP Notice - Shade fabric samples feedback 05112005

PROJECT NAME:

We would like your feedback about Window Treatments!

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Review final selections of shade fabric for windows.

Mock up samples of shade fabrics under consideration will be installed for viewing in Building 3 Rooms 215 and 216.

WHY?

Window treatments serve multiple functions, including solar shading, glare reduction, thermal insulation, and provision of privacy.  In the past couple of years over multiple projects at CSM and Skyline, the Facilities Department has tested several window treatment solutions and we believe we’ve found the best one.  Since meccho shades have not yet been installed at Cañada College, we are soliciting your feedback!

What’s wrong with the standard horizontal blinds that we already have?  Horizontal louvered blinds do not fully meet our needs.  Their glare reduction value is nonexistent when open, and marginal when closed (which then shuts out the beautiful views and connection to the outside world).  They do not provide adequate room darkening for visual projection.  Their thermal insulating values are marginal, reducing occupant comfort levels.  They are easily damaged and difficult to keep clean.

What’s right about meccho shades?  They meet our stringent performance criteria, including:

  • Maintain a visual connection to the exterior while reducing eye strain associated with glare.
  • Reduce heat gain when it’s hot outside and heat loss when it’s cold, improving occupant comfort.
  • Provide a singular, economical solution that allows all our classrooms to become Smart Classrooms in the coming years without further modification to window coverings and the associated expense:  the single shade cuts enough light from the outside to allow for visual projection in our classrooms that will have ever-increasing reliance on technology to support modern pedagogy.
  • Easy to clean, improving indoor environmental quality.
  • Damaged fabric can be easily replaced by local staff over the coming decades, reducing total cost of ownership.
