Subject: Construction Notice - Excavation Work - Building 6 and 7A Site

Hi everyone – now that it looks like we are on the tail end of the winter wet season, our construction contractor (Hensel Phelps) will be getting underway starting next Monday, February 7 to excavate a lot of the dirt in the construction site for our new Bldg 6 (Student Support and Community Services Center) and Bldg 7A (Science Annex).  This will be in preparation for building foundation work to follow.  The exact duration of this work is unknown at this time, but we can expect it to last 2-3 weeks.

Some of the impacts to the campus will be –

  1. Noise - heavy construction equipment will be operating within the fenced construction site.  The running of diesel engines, equipment exhaust noise, and the annoying ‘beep-beep-beep’ from the equipment and trucks as they back up . . . all will be trying at times.
  2. Traffic congestion – some can be expected along the Sharp Park Boulevard entrance to campus as construction trucks enter and leave campus.

The ‘plus’ side to all of this is that we will be getting the initial phases of the construction underway.  Up to now, we only saw underground work and demolition within the site – not real exciting portions of the construction.

Please be careful around the construction area and allow yourself some extra time if you come onto or leave campus via the Sharp Park entrance.

Thanks – and I appreciate your patience.  I know we were all beginning to wonder if anything was going to get started in the construction site: or that we’d have to look at the site the way it is looks like now forever.  Take care -
