PEER REVIEW (for HOMEWORK)
HOMEWORK:
(1) Visit http://www.mevelinagalang.com/ and read through the site.
(2) Read Ch. 1-3 in M. Evelina Galang's One Tribe (pp. 5-52)
(3) Journal Entry #11 (Discussion Questions - BELOW). Please answer your assigned question in a thoughtful, 1- to 2-page, double-spaced journal entry.
(4) Read the Wikipedia article on "Tribe": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribe
#1 - Morgan, Marijoy, Dante
When Ferdi and Isabel meet for the first time, and Isabel tells him that she taught the creation myth of the Philippines that day, Ferdi asks her which myth she taught, “The one about the bird?...Or the one about Malakas and Maganda?...You know, the Pinoy version of Adam and Eve?” (17). What is the difference between the two myths? And why is this difference significant to Ferdi?
#2 - Tiffany, Mitch, Mike
As Isabel talks to the Tidewater community at the Back to School party in the Philippine Cultural Center for the first time, she thinks to herself, “In Virginia children weren’t islands. They were the oceans, bodies of water so large and full so full, so tumultuous, that no one, not even the administration, could ignore them” (20). What do these metaphors mean?
#3 - Jonah, Ninya, Steven
Isabel considers herself “a tourist in a foreign land, a camera around her neck, a Tagalog-English dictionary open in front of her” (21) even though she is a Filipina among other Filipinos. Why?
#4 - Alam, Mikey, Clyde, Jonathan
After Isabel finds out that one of the kids had been shot and killed, the readers find out about how she lost her child: “Two years ago Isabel misplaced her baby” (24). Why is her loss first described as a baby “misplaced” rather than “miscarried”? What effect did this have on her life? How does this situation relate to the photo she took of her younger sister Millie when she was 4 years old? (40).
#5 - Amanda, Adrian, Emerson, Carlo
The first time that Isabel enters the hallway of the school, she encounters a mural that “illustrated the lives of the youth,” focusing particularly on the depiction of the girls: “Fishtails caught her eye, the long strands of mermaid hair sailing across the wall, and arms that moved like ribbons wrapped their way around the boys” (28). Isabel first thinks that mermaids and sirens were nothing more than the high school mascots. But what other significance do they have in the novel so far?
#6 - Jennie, Frank, Richard
Throughout the first three chapters, descriptions of photographs are placed at certain points of the narrative. What do these photographs represent or signify? Why are they placed where they are? How do they relate to Isabel’s story?
#7 - Francis, Katreilla, Anthony
Chapter 3 is primarily about the life of Frank Manalo, Isabel’s father. What is the significance of his story? What does it have to do with Isabel’s current situation in Virginia Beach?
