I hope you will enjoy and profit from this adventure you are about to embark on! Please note that it will be assumed that you have successfully completed the prerequisites for this course.
Required materials:
· Essentials of General Chemistry, Ebbing, Gammon, Ragsdale Second Edition
· Chem 210 Laboratory Manual by Kate Deline
· Sargent Welch Periodic Table
· Laboratory safety glasses or safety goggles
· Approved scientific calculator. A graphing calculator will not be allowed on exams.
Homework:
· Problems will be assigned mainly from the textbook. Each day you should do the problems that go along with that day’s lecture material. Try to do the problems first without looking at the lecture notes or the textbook. If you cannot do the problem, then, look at an example in the lecture notes or the textbook. But remember, you need to go back and do this problem without any assistance before the exam. It is your responsibility to keep up with the homework assigned. The homework will be collected. CAUTION: Just looking at the solutions manual is NOT doing the homework.
Laboratory:
· Laboratory safety is a high priority at College of San Mateo. You must make sure that you are prepared for the lab each week. This includes reading the lab BEFORE coming to the prelab lecture and making sure you have your safety glasses on before starting the lab. The lab report will be due at the end of the lab period unless otherwise indicated.
Examination Schedule:
· Content Checks: Five points each. Handed out on Friday and returned on Wednesday
· Class Questions: Pop quizzes given in lecture. Each will be worth between one and three points.
· Exams: See lab schedule for date. The exams will have true-false, multiple choice, short answer, application and calculation questions. You will need to show all of your work and reasoning for each question on your exam. You will ONLY be able to use an approved calculator for each exam. Cheating will not be tolerated. You will receive a zero on your exam if you cheat. Each exam is worth 125 points. You will have the entire lab period to complete the exam. You may bring two information sheets (8 1/2" x 11" one side only) to each exam. The final exam will be comprehensive and worth 200 points. You may bring eight information sheets to the final exam.
