The purpose of this course is to extend your knowledge of chemistry to the analysis of samples and the interpretation of data collected. By doing so, you will be able to have a better feel for the type of analysis necessary and the reliability of the analysis chosen.

Required materials:

You need to come to all of the lectures and labs. If an emergency arises and you must miss a class make sure you call and leave me a message. Also, make sure you have someone in class that will pick up the handouts for you and let you copy their lecture notes. You should set aside time each day to read and recopy your lecture notes. Plan on coming to at least one office hour per week. It is very helpful to form study groups for this class. You need to set aside at least one hour per day to do the homework from this class. This course builds on the material from the second semester of general chemistry. You need to have time to study and master the material. Make sure that you can do all of the examples covered in class and in lab. DO all of the homework. Problems will be assigned mainly from the textbook. Try to do the problems WITHOUT looking at the lecture notes or textbook. Mark where you get stuck and why you are stuck. Now look at the lecture notes, textbook to see if you can get it. Come to office hours if you are still stuck. But, remember you need to go back and do a similar problem without any assistance before the exam. It is your responsibility to keep up with the lecture material, the lab work and the homework.

Laboratory:

Laboratory safety is a high priority at College of San Mateo. You must make sure that you are prepared for the lab each lab period. This includes reading the lab, doing any prelab questions, wearing proper clothing and having your safety glasses. There will be two types of lab reports in this class depending on the lab performed. You will be told what type of report and when the report will be due at the beginning of each new lab. You must turn in ALL of the lab reports. You are also required to maintain a laboratory notebook that will be graded at the end of the semester.

Examination Schedule:

·        Content Checks: ten points each.

·        Class Questions: Pop quizzes given in lecture. Each will be worth one point.

·        Exams:  See lab schedule for date. The exams are not just multiple choice. They will also have true-false, short answer, application and calculation questions. You will need to show all of your work and reasoning for each question on your exam. You will ONLY be able to use an approved calculator for each exam. Cheating will not be tolerated. You will receive a zero on your exam if you cheat. Each exam is worth 125 points. You will have the entire class period to complete the exam. You may bring four information sheets (8 1/2" x 11" one side only with your name on the back) to each exam. The final exam will be comprehensive and worth 200 points. You may bring fourteen information sheets to the final exam.
