Class Hours:

Lectures: M T W R 1:10 PM – 2:40 PM  Room 36-319

Labs:       M T W R 2:50 PM – 4:20 PM Room 36-306

Required materials:

·        Basic Chemistry , Timberlake

·        Chem 192 Laboratory Manual

·        Sargent Welch Periodic Table

·        Laboratory safety glasses or safety goggles

·        Approved scientific calculator. A graphing calculator will not be allowed on exams.

 

Homework:

·        Problems will be assigned mainly from the textbook. Try to do the problems first without looking at the lecture notes or the textbook. If you cannot do the problem, then, look at an example in the lecture notes or the textbook. Come to office hours if you are still stuck or ask questions after the lab is done. But remember, you need to go back and do this problem without any assistance before the exam. It is your responsibility to keep up with the homework assigned.

 

Laboratory:

·        Laboratory safety is a high priority at College of San Mateo. You must make sure that you are prepared for the lab each week. This includes reading the lab BEFORE coming to the lab and making sure you have your safety glasses before starting the lab. 

 

Examination Schedule:

·        Content Checks: Five points each.

·        Class Questions: Pop quizzes given in lecture. Each will be worth one point.

·        Exams:  See lab schedule for date. The exams are not just multiple choice. They will also have true-false, short answer, application and calculation questions. You will need to show all of your work and reasoning for each question on your exam. You will ONLY be able to use an approved calculator for each exam. Cheating will not be tolerated. You will receive a zero on your exam if you cheat. Each exam is worth 125 points. You will have the entire class period to complete the exam. You may bring two information sheets (8 1/2" x 11" one side only with your name on the back) to each exam. The final exam will be comprehensive and worth 200 points. You may bring eight information sheets to the final exam.
