Tutorials: Mondays 9:30am to 10:30 am in the ISC (36-110), Friday 2pm to 3pm

Required materials:

Essentials of General Chemistry, second edition by Ebbing, Gammon, Ragsdale. Last semester we covered the material in chapters 1 through 12. This semester we will be covering the material in chapters 13 through 22. We will start with chapter 15.

Kate Deline’s Chem 220 Laboratory Manual

Sargent Welch periodic table

Laboratory safety glasses (goggles) that meet lab safety standards

One ream of photocopy paper

The second semester builds on the material from the first semester! There will be a lot more mathematical manipulations in this course compared to last semester. You need to have time to study and master the material. Make sure that you can do all of the examples covered in class and in lab. DO all of the homework. Try to do the problems that go along with the lecture as soon as possible after that lecture. Problems will be assigned from the textbook and there will be handouts. Try to do the problems WITHOUT looking at the solutions manual, lecture notes or textbook. Mark where you get stuck and why you are stuck. Now look at the lecture notes and textbook to see if you can get it. If not come to the tutorial hours or bring your questions to lab. Remember you need to go back and do a similar problem without any assistance before the exam. It is your responsibility to keep up with the lecture material, the lab work and the homework.

Laboratory:

Laboratory safety is a high priority at College of San Mateo. You must make sure that you are prepared for the lab each lab period. This includes reading the lab BEFORE the prelab lecture, wearing proper clothing and having your safety glasses. The lab report will be due at the end of the period unless otherwise stated. You must turn in ALL of the lab reports. You are also required to maintain a laboratory notebook that will be graded at the end of the semester.

Please note that I do not give students a W. If you need to withdraw from the class you need to obtain the W yourself.

Examination Schedule:

Content Checks: Five points each. Located on my website and due on Wednesdays.

Class Questions: Pop quizzes given in lecture. Each will be worth one point.

Exams:  See lab schedule for date. The exams will have true-false, multiple choice, short answer, applications and calculation questions. You will need to show all of your work and reasoning for each question on your exam. You will ONLY be able to use an approved calculator for each exam. Cheating will not be tolerated. You will receive a zero on your exam if you cheat. Each exam is worth 125 points. You will have the entire lab period to complete the exam. You may bring two information sheets (8 1/2" x 11" one side only) to each exam. The final exam will be comprehensive and worth 200 points. You may bring eight information sheets to the final exam.
