Biographical Information

I have been teaching at the College of San Mateo for 27 years. Teaching at CSM is professionally exciting. The students have varied interests and backgrounds which challenge me to make the study of philosophy relevant and meaningful for a wide range of persons. This diverse classroom keeps me learning, thinking and searching.

I have taught previously at San Jose City College, De Anza College, Mount San Antonio College and at West Coast University.

I came to study Philosophy as an undergraduate when I found it was a safe place to ask questions and pursue understanding and meaning. No matter what else I studied, I kept coming back to the great ideas and questions with which Philosophy engages. After twenty years as a "student", I still find it fascinating. I now have a much better grasp on all that I don't know.

The greatest philosophical influences have come from Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, Gabriel Marcel, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

In addition to teaching, I read a lot, play music, run, play cribbage, bike, golf, and spend time with my wife Sandy and our dogs Fifi and Jack.
