| Why Doesn't a Student Appear on My List? |
| |
It is important to understand that if a student's name does no show up on WebSmart then the student is not officially enrolled in the class. The following list offers some explanation for this situation.
The student may have enrollment limitations!
- Enrollment limitations are imposed as a result of current academic standing.
(Students on DISMISSAL STATUS due to low GPA and/or class progress are barred from registration without counseling intervention)
We have several hundred students on dismissal status who have been "conditionally" reinstated into specific classes.
It takes a student at least 3 semesters of substandard academic performance to "achieve" dismissal. Our review indicates that, typically, these students have continued to make errors in course loads and course selection. As a result we limit the number of units in which a student can enroll and we often select specific courses a student must complete. When a student is on dismissal the College can legally monitor and limit enrollment in a manner to support success. If a student is not officially enrolled in your class he/she may be on dismissal status and was not given authorization to enroll in the class.
- Enrollment limitations are imposed as part of the College, District, and Title 5 regulations regarding course repetition. Page 34 of the Catalog addresses the issue.
A student who has received a grade of D, F, or NC may repeat the course only ONE time for grade alleviation. When a student unsuccessfully attempts a general education course twice they are expected to choose a different course to meet the area requirement. (The student may still alleviate the grades through the Academic Renewal Policy, but that is another story.) A student may submit a petition to attempt a class a third time, but unless there are some educationally justifiable extenuating circumstances that can be documented, the petition is denied.
For English classes, BANNER blocks registration for students who do not have the course prerequisites
as identified by SMCCCD placement tests and/or prerequisite courses completed within SMCCCD. The Dean (Dr. Estes) reviews petitions from students who request review of coursework completed at other college/universities to meet listed prerequisites for CSM English courses.
Students may not have paid their enrollment fees.
Fee payment is the last step of the registration process and if a student has not paid required fees by the September 3 deadline date then he/she is not enrolled.
To summarize, if a student is not officially enrolled in your class by September 3rd, he/she may have imposed enrollment limitations or has not completed the registration process by paying required fees. Any student who does not appear on your CURRENT/Sept 6th WEBSMART ROLL should be immediately referred to the Admissions and Records Office or the Office of Counseling, Advising, and Matriculation. Only students who are officially enrolled should be sitting in classes. Thank you.
