Classes of related training are offered for apprentices in certain trades. These classes follow the course outlined by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee and the Division of Apprenticeship Standards of the State of California.
STEP 1: TRAD 880 Special Topics: Survey of Skilled Trades Students should take this course. It is a survey course that explores skilled trades. Topics include: a day in the life of an electrician/carpenter/plumber or other skilled trades; career pathways to becoming a journeymen; what the college offers apprentices, and much more.
STEP 2: Math and English Placement Test Students should take the math and English placement tests, so that they can be directed to the appropriate level classes. This can be done while in TRAD 880 or one of the career courses.
STEP 3: Continue with classes and Cooperative Education Students should continue to take courses that prepare them for the apprenticeship entrance examination. Math level should reach MATH 110 Elementary Algebra. Starting fall 2008 look for a new “Math in Technology” course. Students’ English level should minimally be ENGL 828 or ESL 825. Cooperative Education enables students to earn college credit for work and learning done on the job. Cooperative Education involves (a) students attending CSM full or part time and working full or part time; or (b) students working full time one semester and attending CSM the next.
