• Work toward a vocational certificate, or
• Work toward an Associated degree, or
• Complete a university transfer program and transfer to earn a Bachelor's degree, or
• If you are currently undecided but considering one of the goals listed above.

If you are a non-exempt student, follow the steps listed below and you will receive an appointment to register for classes.
As a non-exempt matriculating student you will be eligible for priority registration as a continuing student.

You are NOT required to go through the matriculation steps and are considered an exempt student if:

• you are taking courses for personal enrichment only and do not intend to earn a certificate or degree
• you have already completed an Associate's degree or higher, or
• you are enrolled at another college or university and attending CSM to meet requirements of that institution only.

If you are an exempt student, submit a College Admissions application and you will receive an appointment to register
in the mail or viewable on your WebSMART account.

Let's review the MATRICULATION STEPS required for registration of NON-EXEMPT new and returning students at
College of San Mateo:

	Admission	- Submit a completed Admission Application to the Office of Admissions & Records (you can do this via the web or use the paper application in the Schedule of Classes)
	Assessment	- Students are required to take placement tests in English or ESL and mathematics. These tests are NOT entrance exams but used for course placement purposes only.
	Orientation	- Complete the College Orientation Program via this Online Orientation or an In Person Orientation. We SUGGEST you do both, because the more information you have the more prepared you are for your CSM experience.
	Counseling/Advising	- Your counseling session will focus on discussion of your ASSESSMENT results, your ORIENTATION experience, and your EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND INTERESTS. At this time, a Counselor will assist you to select appropriate class choices for your first semester.
	Registration&Follow-up:	- At the conclusion of your counseling session you can register for classes. The FOLLOW-UP component is one that you participate in the entire time you are a student at CSM! We see this as the most CRUCIAL component in the matriculation process. You will learn more about it later in this Orientation.
