What is the English 800 Lab Component?
All students enrolled in English 838 and 848 must complete a lab component. As a student enrolled in English 838 and 848, you have the opportunity to sharpen your writing skills in the specific area(s) your classroom teacher has recommended. WIth the lab component, you can take advantage of all the resources in the English 800 Lab, so you can improve your writing.

To accomplish the lab component, you must complete at least one tutorial and one essay conference with an English 800 lab instructor.

How do I begin?
1. After your teacher completes the green English 800 Lab Reporting Form (usually after your first writing assignment in the first weeks of class) and returns it to you, immediately take the reporting form to the English 800 Lab.

2. You will be required to read and sign the lab policy and to fill out a Student Record Form in the English 800 Lab.

How do I complete the assigned parts of tutorial(s)?
In order to complete each tutorial, you must complete two parts. The first part consists of reading explanations of a specific writing skill and completing exercises. The second part is the writing assignment.

You will go to the English 800 Lab in Building 18, Room 102 to begin the tutorial (either hard copy or on the Web). After completion of the exercises and writing assignment, you must sign up for a conference with an 800 Lab instructor. An instructional aide, instructor, or student assistant will be available to help you access materials and exercises.

How do I complete the first part of my tutorial?
You may complete the first part by choosing one of the following options:

**Option 1, The Over-Night Check-Out Option:
Check out the assigned tutorial from the English 800 Lab, complete your work, and return the tutorial the next day to 18-102.

**Option 2, The 800 Lab Online Option:
We now have the 800 lab tutorials online. Print out and complete the exercises at home. After you have finished the tutorial, bring the work that you have completed to the English 800 Lab.

**Option 3, The 800 Lab Option:
Come to the 800 Lab, find your tutorial binder, and complete your work in the lab.

**Option 4, The 800 Lab Two-Hour Workshop Option:
You can sign up on the bulletin board in the English 800 Lab and attend a two-hour workshop that focuses on one skill covering material for a specific tutorial. Pick up a workshop schedule in the lab for more information.

What should I do after I've completed the first part of my tutorial?
You must sign up to meet with an English 800 lab instructor in 18-102 after completing the first part of your tutorial. After reviewing your work, if your work is satisfactory, the lab instructor will indicate on your green English 800 Lab Reporting Form that you have completed the first part of your tutorial. If you attend a workshop, be sure to have the workshop instructor sign your reporting form.

How do I complete the second part of my tutorial?
After completing the writing assignment, sign up to meet with an English 800 lab instructor in 18-102. After reviewing your writing assignment with you, the lab instructor should indicate on your green English 800 Lab Reporting Form that you have completed this section of your tutorial.

How do I get help with my essays in the English 800 Lab?
You must sign up for a conference with a lab instructor to get help with your essay. You should bring a copy of your essay and the essay assignment sheet to your conference with your English 800 Lab instructor. Even if your classroom instructor has not specified that you must do activities in the English 800 Lab, you can sign up for an appointment with a lab instructor to get help with an essay. The lab instructor will record notes about this meeting on your green reporting form.

What can I expect from an essay conference with an English 800 lab instructor?
Your lab instructor will spend about twenty minutes discussing your essay with you. It is a good idea to come prepared with questions or specific areas that you need help with. Since time is limited, this will allow the instructor to give you as much assistance as possible during the conference. When your conference is over, ask your instructor to indicate on the green English 800 Lab Reporting Form that you have completed a conference appointment.

Although your essay grades will probably improve, a conference with an English 800 lab instructor does not ensure that you will receive an A on a paper. The English 800 Lab is not a proofreading service; instead, your instructor will use the conference as an opportunity to teach you to revise and proofread your own work. The instructor’s goal is to help you become an independent editor of your own writing. You are limited to three conferences per essay.

How do I sign up for an appointment with an instructor?
The appointment sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board at the front of the room in the English 800 Lab. Sign ups for future weeks are on the table in the front of the bulletin board.

If there are no conference times available, you may come to the 800 Lab at the time you wish to see an instructor and use the stand-by list. Although there are no guarantees, more often than not, instructors find time to work with people on the stand-by list.

What happens if I cannot come to an appointment?
Please keep all appointments or call to cancel your appointment as far in advance of your scheduled appointment as possible. Call the English 800 Lab at (650) 574-6539. If you miss more than two appointments, you will lose the right to make another appointment.

What should I do if the English 800 Lab is closed when I come to work?
If the English 800 Lab is closed, you can work in the Writing Center next door (18-104). In the Writing Center, the instructional aide and faculty can help with questions on homework or work with you on class essays in conference. They will sign your green reporting form when you finish working. You must bring the green reporting form whenever you come to work in the English 800 Lab or the Writing Center.

Can I use the computers in the Writing Center?
As as student enrolled in English 828, 838, or 848, you can use the computers in the Writing Center and can get help from the instructional aide and student assistants with computer questions. You must bring the green form whenever you come to work in the Writing Center.

What is the English 828 Lab Component?
All students enrolled in English 828 must complete a lab component. With the lab component, you can take advantage of all the resources in the English 800 Lab, so you can improve your writing.

How do I begin?
1. Your instructor will give you a blue English 800 Lab Reporting Form which will tell you what activities you need to do in order to fulfill this requirement. As soon as you receive it, you need to bring your blue form to the English 800 Lab in Building 18, Room 102 to get started.

2. You will be required to read and sign the lab policy and to fill out a Student Record Form in the English 800 Lab.

My English 828 instructor has specified that I should do my homework in the English 800 Lab. How does that work?
Plan to spend an hour in the lab, working on your assignment. Bring your assignment and your blue reporting form to the lab, and find a comfortable place to work. If you have questions or need help, you can ask the instructional aide or the English instructor on duty for help. When you have finished working, the aide or instructor will sign your blue reporting form. Keep your blue form in a safe place because you will need it all semester and must give it to your English 828 instructor so that s/he can keep track of the work you have completed for the lab component requirement.

In addition to working on my homework, can I get help with my class essays in the English 800 Lab?
Even if your classroom instructor has not specified it, you can sign up for an appointment with a lab instructor to get help with an essay. You should bring your essay and the essay assignment to your conference with your lab instructor. The instructor will record notes about this meeting on your blue reporting form.

Since time is limited, this will allow the instructor to give you as much assistance as possible during the conference.
