Faculty Profile

Dr. A. S. (Ed) Cheng

Bio

Dr. Cheng received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002.  He joined San Francisco State University (SFSU) in 2004 and now holds the position of Associate Professor. His areas of specialty are thermodynamics, combustion, internal combustion engines, fluid mechanics, and air quality engineering. His recent research has focused on biofuels and advanced combustion strategies for compression-ignition engines.  At SFSU, Dr. Cheng teaches courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and engineering experimentation.

Areas of specialization

  • Alternative and renewable diesel fuels
  • Advanced in-cylinder combustion strategies for internal combustion engines
  • Numerical modeling of engine combustion
  • Exhaust aftertreatment
  • Combustion and emissions diagnostics for internal combustion engines
