Staged Readings Feature New Works by Emerging Bay Area Playwrights
Audience members will be encourage to discuss the plays and provide artists with feedback.
The Cañada College Theater Arts Department presents the first annual Raw
Theater Reading Series. The series will present
seven live script-in-hand readings of plays written by emerging Bay Area playwrights, Theater Arts students, and four of the most
celebrated playwrights working in American theater today. Audiences are
encouraged to discuss the play, and in some cases give feedback to the
playwright, after each performance.
The readings will take place on alternate
Wednesdays 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., starting Sept. 16 with a reading of Cañada College Theater Arts Professor Anna Budd's play The
Woman in Armor. "This play will be produced this semester, and audience
feedback is a critical part of developing the script," said Budd.
The second
staged reading is of Budd's play Denial: A Love Story. This play,
written over the summer, is Budd's personal response to the passage of
Prop 8, and is co-sponsored by the Cañada College Drama Club and the Queer Straight
Alliance.
The third play in the series is by Theater Arts student Max Tachis. Tachis is a talented young playwright who wrote No Acting Please, Pandamonium, and Writer's Block for last year's Student One Act Festival...in 3D! and The Revenge of the Student One Act Festival.
