Assigned on: |
After introducing examples of a new section, if I assign a range of problems from the current section for you to select work from, you should try the odds in that range, check the answers in back, go to tutoring, etc., and bring questions to class. BE SURE TO CLICK ON RELOAD/REFRESH
ON YOUR COMPUTER OR THE CURRENT ADDITIONS TO THE PAGE MAY NOT APPEAR! You may also not see current pages if your computer does not
have an up-to date browser… download a
new version or use a library/lab computer. I see how far we get in lecture before I come up with a homework assignment, and will generally post that new assignment by 12pm the day of lecture! |
|
W 01/21 |
Read section 1.1 and 1.2 about the number system and addition. If you plan to take this course, get the book as soon as you can so you do not get left without one. Your first assignment will be on Friday! |
|
F 01/23 |
We worked on more addition problems, some subtraction problems, and talked about how multiplication is repeated addition, so that you do not need to have a copy of the multiplication tables to refer to; you can easily recreate the products you need. For example, you can write the product as a sum, then add by pairs: 4*7=7+7+7+7=14+14=28
Homework due M 01/26: 1.2 p13 #20, 24 1.3 p20 #18, 28, 30, 40 (This is just what I want turned in. You should do more problems for yourself!) |
|
M 01/26 |
We worked on multiplication using columns after going over the homework. Read thru section 1.4 and browse section 1.6 for next time and do the following:
Homework due W 01/28: 1.5 p37 # 4, 8, 18, 26, 36 (This is just what I want turned in. You should do more problems for yourself!)
Quiz on addition on Weds. |
|
W 01/28 |
We worked on long division in section 1.6 after going over the homework.
Homework due F 01/30: 1.6 p48 # 32, 40, 46, 52, 60 (This is just what I want turned in. You should do more problems for yourself!)
Quiz on subtraction (section 1.3 on Fri.) |
|
F 01/30 |
Did more long division, then went back to section 1.4 to pick up rounding skills. We will talk about solving of equations on Monday.
Homework due M 02/02: 1.4 p27 # 4, 16, 22 1.6 p50 # 72, 74
Quiz on multiplication on Monday |
|
M 02/02 |

Homework due F 02/06: 1.7 p56 # 16, 24, 30, 46, 56
Quiz on work assigned on 01/30 above on Friday. |
|
F 02/06 |
We will come back to section 1.9 next week, but for today, we worked on using tree diagrams to find prime factors. Read the section…it shows you how the trees can be made! Start loving the primes…they will save you later in your work with fractions.
Homework due M 02/09: 2.1 p96 # 48, 54, 60, 67, 76
Quiz on work assigned on 02/02 above on Monday. |
|
M 02/09 |
We worked on understanding what a fraction means (in section 2.3) and using prime factors to reduce fractions (in section 2.5). In 2.5, be sure to show all prime factors before cancelling, as in ex. 6 on p124.
Homework due W 02/11: 2.3 p110 # 14, 24 2.5p127 # 10, 26, 40
Quiz on work assigned on 02/04 above on Wednesday. |
|
W 02/11 |
WE DO NOT MEET ON FRIDAY 02/13 OR MONDAY 02/16… YOU HAVE THESE DAYS OFF FOR PRESIDENTS’ DAYS!!! ENJJOY!!!
We continued working on using primes to factor, reduce fractions and multiply fractions. Soon, we will move on to look at using primes to find LCDs (least common denominators) to help in adding and subtracting fractions.
Look at the examples in 2.6 starting on p129 then look at the following examples with larger numbers (since they do not include very interesting problems, I am giving you some more below!).
Here are some problems to practice multiplying and dividing (not to turn in, but to use as a guide to the use of primes): 1.
(12/77)*(35/60) Answer:
(2*2*3)/(7*11) * (5*7)/(2*2*3*5) = 1/11 2.
(9/210)*(175/15) Answer: (3*3)/(2*3*5*7) *
(5*5*7)/(3*5) = 1/2 3.
(16/45)*(315/24) Answer: (2*2*2*2)/(3*3*5) *
(3*3*5*7)/(2*2*2*3) =
14/3 4. (24/16) *
(15/315) Answer: (2*2*2*3)/(2*2*2*2)
* (3*5)/(3*3*5*7)
=1/14
TURN IN (due Wednesday 02/18): Show all prime factors for each numerator (top of fraction) and denominator (bottom of fraction) 1. (28/105)*(15/12) 2. (60/350)*(20/105) 3. (63/49)*(294/12) 4. (108/63) * (196/150) 5. (210/231) * (420/462)
Quiz on finding primes (as in section 2.1) next time! |
|
W 02/18 |
TURN IN (due Friday 02/20): We worked on division of fractions using primes (as in section 2.7, but with somewhat larger numbers). The nice part about division is that you can turn it into multiplication and then just do the same thing you did for the last homework! For instance, (12/77) divided by
(60/35) is the same as (12/77) multiplied by (35/60), so as above, Answer: (2*2*3)/(7*11) * (5*7)/(2*2*3*5) = 1/11 Show all prime factors for each numerator (top of fraction) and denominator (bottom of fraction) 1. (5/6) divided by (5) 2. (360) divided by (8/7) 3. (8/9) divided by (70/15) 4. (12/14) divided by (6/98) 5. (9/30) divided by (6/20)
Quiz on homework assigned on 02/09 (as in section 2.3/2.5) next time! |

Keep an eye on the
schedule. Those who have not completed the Unit 2 test will have to do so by
Weds. 5/6 next week. Then the first attempt at the Unit 3 test will be on the
following Weds. If you pass the first attempt of that test by then, you will
be done for the semester…that is how close we are to the end! If you need
another attempt, that will occur the following Weds.5/20. Then finals week
starts and you will have one last chance the next weds. 5/27. The sooner you
finish, the better off you will be for studying in your other classes! I can offer you another
chance at the Unit 2 test on Friday 5/1 this week from 8:10-9:00 or
10:10-11:00 with one of my other classes which will be taking a test. Let me
know if you want that. Otherwise, you will have to schedule outside of class

|
W 05/13 |
I’ll
have your Unit 3 1st attempt back to you on Friday! For
those that did not pass it this time, we will work on the problems on Friday
and Monday, then you will have another attempt on Weds. |
|
M 5/18 |
No
one came to review today, so I left after about 10 minutes. I assume that
means that you feel ready, not that you have disappeared! You must come on
Weds. 5/20 to try again if you did not pass it the first time (a very few
passed it!). If you wait until finals week to take it and are not ready by
then, you risk losing your credit for the semester. Don’t go there! |
|
W 5/20 |
No
one came to the last review day on Monday, but apparently, a number of you
needed the review after all, judging from the 2nd attempt on 5/20.
There are still quite a few of you who need to take the 3rd attempt
of the Unit 3 test. You must come to our usual room on Weds. 5/27 from
9:10-10:00 and be prepared to pass…otherwise, you will not receive credit for
the course. There will be no more attempts after 5/27. |
