We continued
working on using primes to factor, reduce fractions and multiply and divide fractions.
Next time, we will move on to look at using primes to find LCDs (least common
denominators) to help in adding and subtracting fractions. Here are
some problems to practice multiplying and dividing (not to turn in, but to
use as a guide to the use of primes): 1. (12/77)*(35/60) Answer: (2*2*3)/(7*11) *
(5*7)/(2*2*3*5) = 1/11 2. (9/210)*(175/15) Answer: (3*3)/(2*3*5*7) * (5*5*7)/(3*5)
= 1/2 3. (16/45)*(315/24) Answer: (2*2*2*2)/(3*3*5) * (3*3*5*7)/(2*2*2*3)
= 14/3 4. (24/16) divided by (315/15) Answer:
(2*2*2*3)/(2*2*2*2) * (3*5)/(3*3*5*7) =1/14 (Remember
that you turn division into multiplication by flipping the 2nd
fraction). TURN IN (due Friday): 1.
(60/350)*(20/105) 2.
(63/49)*(294/12) 3. (108/63)
divided by (150/196) 4. (210/231)
divided by (462/420) 5.
(630/2310) divided by (1925/180)

Quiz Friday on hmk assigned on 9/11
NOTE: I stated in the syllabus and in class several times that electronic devices are not to even be touched in the classroom while class is in session. Still, instances occur each session (I have observed such use each session whether I have mentioned it or not!). It does not matter if you are just checking your messages, your actions will be perceived as cheating. From here to the end of the semester, I will not provide any more warnings. The class is being put on notice that any future instances of touching electronic devices in class will result in the student being asked to leave the class for the remainder of the session. Forced dismissal from class will affect your absence totals and can result in your being dropped from the class for the semester.
You will have your first test on Monday 9/21 as scheduled. To
help you prepare, there is a practice test below that is of the same form as
the one you will take on Monday. Find a quiet place to take the test for 50
minutes or less and then check your answers with those I provided below. To
pass the test, you must have at least 7 out of 10 completely correct. If you
do not pass the test, you will be assigned more tutoring hours that you will
have to complete to earn another chance to take it. Make your attempts count!
Come with questions on Friday if you have them. Note that the division symbol
does not read well here, so on one problem I used % to indicate division. On
another, I wrote out “divided by”. The traditional division symbol with a
horizontal line and two dots will be used on the actual test. Multiplication
is indicated here with either X or * but one dot may be used on the test
instead. (This is not an assignment to turn in). UNIT 1 TEST

If you passed the first attempt with 7/10 or better, you do not need to come to class on Monday, although you are welcome to come if you just want to take the test again for practice. If you did not pass the first attempt, you must have completed your assigned tutoring hours by today to qualify. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to take the test.

W 12/02 |
We finished up the material for the Unit 3 test from sections 6.6, 9.2, 11.4. Please come Friday 12/04 for review and then you may take the test on Monday 12/07 and dispose of your obligation this semester! If you do not take it on Monday 12/07, you will have another opportunity on Friday 12/11. Your third and last chance will be during finals week on Weds. 12/16 in our usual room from 9:10-10:00. You must pass this test to receive credit for the course. Unit 3 test format (Some of the items are from a common final that the math dept insists on, so we talked about them today. Do some problems from each section for practice): 1. It is required by the dept that you know the difference between a “greatest common factor” or GCF, and a “least common multiple” or LCM. Even though the book does not officially treat the GCF, we talked about it when we went over the LCM in section 3.1. Example: p156 #13 Find the LCM and GCF of 18 and 24. Answer: 18=2*3*3 and 24=2*2*2*3 so LCM=2*2*2*3*3=72 and GCF=2*3=6 2. section 5.5 p329 like #9-16 3. section 6.1 p346 like #35-54 4. section 6.2 p354 like #37-60 5. section 6.3 p363 like #7-34 6. section 6.3 p363 like #7-34 7. section 6.6 p390 like #1-6 8. it is required by the dept that you demonstrate knowledge of perimeter and area with respect to triangles. We looked at these with respect to rectangles, but the triangles are in section 9.1p519 and 9.2 p527 (the formula for area is at the bottom of p523). We talked about these today. Example: suppose a triangle that looks like the one in example 7 on p524 has a bottom of size 50, a left side of size 30, a right side of size 40, and a height of size 24. Find the perimeter and area of the triangle. Answer: perimeter=30+40+50=120 and area=(1/2)(50)(24)=600 9. section 10.2 p594 like #1-30, 10.3 p599 like #1-36, 10.4 p604 like #1-22 Example: simplify each (all must be correct) a. -5(-4) b. -5-(-4) c. -5-4 Answer: a. +20 b. -1 c. -9 10. section 11.4 p647 like #1-16 |
