do some odd problems first and check the back of the book! BE SURE TO CLICK ON RELOAD/REFRESH
ON YOUR COMPUTER OR THE CURRENT ADDITIONS TO THE PAGE MAY NOT APPEAR! You may also not see current pages if your computer does
not have an up-to date browser… download
a new version or use a library/lab computer. I see how far we get in lecture before I come up with a homework assignment, and will generally post that new assignment by 1pm the day of lecture! |

10, 12, 30, 36, 56 No quiz yet! Note: I had
to make a clarification about the test policy on the syllabus to match what I
said in class, specifically, that one test from tests 1 thru 4 will be
dropped but test 5 will not. Also, I had to replace some references to Math
111 with those for 112. These changes were made by 1pm Friday 8/21. If you accessed the syllabus before
then, please refresh the page and look again at the revised edition.

We worked
more on section 5.8 today. No class on
Monday 09/07 (Labor Day—enjoy!) Test on Weds
09/09 as scheduled! Homework is to study for your test, which will consist of the following: 1. about 4 problems from 5.1p255/256 like #1-62 2. about 4 problems from 5.2 p265/266 like #1-64 3. about 3 problems from 5.3 p273/274, maybe one like 1-12, one like 13-22, and one like 37-46 4. about 1 or 2 problems from 5.4 p278 like 13-44 5. about 3 problems from 5.5 p283, maybe one like 1-10, one like 11-24 and one like 25-38 6. about 2 problems from 5.6 p288 like #1-36 7.
about 2
problems from 5.8 p297 like #1-24 The quizzes
you have taken tend to reveal my likes for types of problems! In practice for
your test, try picking some odds from each of the groups above and make up
your own test. Sit down and try them, then look up the answers in the back of
the book. Those that you missed maybe should get more attention in study!

Homework is to study for Test 4 which will occur as scheduled on Weds 11/18. The format will be as follows: (by popular demand, we will skip sections 7.6 and 7.7 and include section 8.6 since it was a great popular favorite!)
8.1 p422 probably about 6 short problems like #1-54 especially where you show that you know what is possible when odd and even indexes are used and how minuses affect the answer.
8.2 p430 about 3 problems like #1-60 showing you know how to simplify using the product and quotient rules.
8.3 p436 about 3 problems like #1-38 where you show how to put answers in most simplified form, including rationalization of denominators where needed.
8.4 p440 about 3 problems like #5-50 where you must simplify each radical term before you can identify like radicals and combine them.
8.5 p446 about 3 problems like #1-64 where you sometimes just multiply the factors, or distribute to remove parentheses, or you multiply using FOIL. You have to watch out so as not to make up your own rules, and also that you do not take the problem farther than it can go!
8.6 p452 about 2 problems like # 1-26, (watch out for negatives and don’t do more work than you have to!).

F 12/04 |
We worked on parabolas today. Work on problems in 9.6 p493 #1-16, and #17-20 and #21-24 We will clean up these ideas on Monday, then we will go back to 9.4 and see if you want any of that on your test—I will ask your opinion before I write the test! Then we will review on Weds to prepare for Test#5 on Friday 12/11.
Test #5 topics and problem ranges you should be ready for: 8.6 p452 one like #27-32 9.1 p466 one or two problems like #1-20 9.2 p472 one like #1-18 and one like #19-32 9.3 p479 one like #1-18 9.4 p483 one or two like #1-30 if you like them! 9.5 p487 one like #17-24 9.6 p493 two or three to graph by translation like #1-16, 21-24 9.6 p494 one like #17-20 to graph by finding the vertex through completing the square and then finding the x and y intercepts.
I will firm up the form of the test after getting your input on Monday!

W 12/09 |
9.4 and 9.5 were removed from the test. The following is the format: Test #5 on Friday 12/11: 1. 8.6 p452 one
like #27-32 2. a 9.1 p466 one like #1-10 b 9.1 p466 one like like #11-20 (one rational, one irrational
solutions) 3. a. 9.2 p472 one like #1-18
b. 9.2 p472 one
like #19-32 4. 9.3 p479 one like #1-18 (probably
where you have to move everything to one side, like #15) 5. a. 9.6 p493 one to graph by translation like #1-10 b. 9.6 p493 one to graph by translation like #1-10 c. 9.6 p493 one to graph by translation like #11-16 but where you will also be asked to find the x and y intercepts if they exist and find one other point (such as how
they did in the tables in their examples). 6. 9.6 p494 one like #17-20 to graph by finding the vertex through completing the square and then finding the x and y intercepts as they did in example 4. |
