OIL PAINTING SUPPLY LIST    ART 221/222

There will be a materials lecture and demo on the first day of class to help students to decide whether to use oil or acrylic paints, and to provide an introduction to the materials we will be using. You do not need materials with you until the second class meeting. Acrylic paint has aits own supply list, to view- click here. (do not get both). As a general rule, you should not use both oils and acrylics.

Selecting which art materials to use is important . Please do not underestimate the importance of the materials you will be using. All students need to have on hand a reasonable quality set of paints and brushes in order to be able to successfully complete the studio projects for this class.

You are best off if you purchase materials from the approved list. Low quality sets of paint such as Art Advantage, and Reeves brands are not allowed as a primary set of paints for this class as they are sub-standard and very difficult to work with.

METAL PALETTE / PAINTING KNIVES:
For mixing paint, applying paint to canvas or panel, and scraping paint from canvas. Metal palette knives are more useful than plastic ones.

PALETTES:
For mixing paint on. Small indented plastic palettes as shown below do not work well with oil and acrylic paints. Aluminum pie plates, cheap white plastic dinner plates or disposable paper palette work best. Choose a palette that is large enough to mix your paints, will not absorb water or oil, and is a neutral color like white or gray.
