The Global Dynamics of Sustainability Essay
First Prize: $300 Second Prize: $200 Third Prize: $100

Essays due: October 30, 2007

Essayists may choose to write on any ONE of the following three prompts or topics:

  • Watch the movie, "Who Killed the Electric Car?" (Note: this could be a great chapter Scholarship activity!) Then respond to the following: Which of the identified "suspects" is most guilty of killing the electric car? Justify your decision and discuss the implications with respect to the global dynamics of sustainability.

  • The level of belief in something by its followers is of utmost importance to the success or failure of an idea or movement, but acceptance comes only after awareness and understanding have been achieved. Successful progress toward the goal of sustainability requires this belief. How successfully have the proponents of global sustainability promoted awareness and understanding and how might the cause be better served?

  • Discuss Sustainability vs. Consumption. What steps must be taken on both a local and global basis to assure their co-existence?

The purpose of this essay contest is to stimulate intellectual engagement with both Phi Theta Kappa’s current Honors Study Topic and our International Service Project, “Operation Green: Improving Our Communities.”

For the purpose of this essay contest, we are defining “sustainability” as “any concerted effort to help assure that we meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to achieve economic, social and especially ecological well-being."
