History 201AA (100 pts.) Term project

DUE: MONDAY, APRIL 28TH. For each weekday it is late I will deduct ten points.

FORMAT:

1. Double-space and type your paper. 12 pitch font and 1" margins please. Your paper should be a minimum of five, but no more than seven pages.

2. Put your G# on it. NO NAME.

3. Please edit and proof-read your paper or go to the Learning Center and have someone help you with it.

4. You may use as many sources as you like If you use articles from the internet you must attach them to your paper. I will not read papers without the internet articles attached. I mean it.

5. You must include a "works cited" page. This is at the end of the paper (no, it doesn't count as a page). On it goes a list of the resources you used.

Here is your assignment:

We tend to look at America as a "melting pot", a kettle of different cultures, religions, social mores, food, music and traditions. It is true, New Englanders are stereotyped as stoic and reserved, whereas those in the West are stereotyped as progressive and just a little nutty from eating all that tofu! What is true and why is it true?

1. Pick a section of the country. Northeast, Southwest, Midwest, Gulf Coast, you get the picture.

2. Using internet resources, magazines, or your book tell me about the different cultures, religions, social mores or traditions that define that region. Tell me how these different cultures became important to this particular region of the country.

3. You may want to include who settled there because that certainly influences the culture of an area. For example, many mid-westerners settled in Orange County, California in the late 1800s. Today, Orange County is one of the most conservative areas in California. What belief system did the mid-westerners bring with them that influenced where they settled.

Please ask if you have questions.
