Course Description

This online course covers the history of the United States that begins about 30,000 years ago when hunters crossed the Bering Straits from Eurasia into the Americas. Topics will include the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the impact of the European arrival, colonial life, the American War for Independence, nation-building, and the "bone in the throat" - slavery and the Civil War.

Required Book
The required book for class is A People and A Nation, Norton, et al. It is in the bookstore.

Goals for the course

This online course is a condensed version of the sixteen week course. It will be fast paced and will require that you be organized and motivated to do the work without the instructor prodding you. While we will not be in a traditional setting, there are still learning objectives that must be mastered. They include:

1. Communicate effectively your ideas both orally and in writing.
2. Develop critical reading and interpretative skills.
3. Understand and apply definitions of words and strengthen your vocabulary.
4. Listen responsively and attempt to maintain a level of open mindedness.
5. Apply ideas and concepts from America's past to present day events.

Responsibilities
Your responsibilities include reading the required assignments, participating in any on-line discussions, and being present on three important dates:

Monday, June 9, 2008 - Orientation from 1 - 2pm in room 1107.

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 - Midterm from 1-2 pm in room 1107.

Thursday, July 10th, 2008 - Final Exam from 1-2pm in room 1107.

If you can not make these three dates do not sign up for this class.
