Term Project information

Project worth - 125 pts.
Oral Project - 50 pts.

This project is due Thursday, May 1.  For each weekday it is late I will deduct 10 pts.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Students suggested that I take a more hands-on approach regarding this assignment. So I will. For each weekday it is late I will deduct five points. It will come off of the 125 pts. noted above.

FIRST DATE: TOPIC DUE - March 8th - Use a 8 1/2x11 piece of paper. Type it. Put your name on it.

SECOND DATE: RESOURCE LIST DUE - MARCH 29th. Using above piece of paper, separate your resources into Primary and Secondary.

A term project, or end-of-the semester project in a liberal arts course usually consists of a research paper.  It is important that you organize yourself, begin work on it in a timely fashion, and have it totally completed at least two days before it is due.

I am going to use a very different approach this semester.  I thought it would be very interesting to use the following website http://www.legacy-project.org/ for your term project.

The Legacy Project attempts to build a global exchange on the enduring consequences of the many historical tragedies of the 20th century.  As the survivors of historical traumas pass on, the lasting resonance of their experiences will depend on whether younger generations can understand and recognize them.

The Legacy Project offers a channel for mutual recognition across generations and geography. Through scholarly research and innovative presentation, The Legacy Project will create new — and shared — frameworks for cultural expressions of loss, drawn from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Our work will help define the language of human loss - its forms, its symbols, its grammar.  Through it, The Legacy Project seeks a collective, retrospective reflection on the losses that constitutes the legacy of the last century. (Legacy Project website).

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

1. Go to Legacy Events Index.  Choose one topic from the various topics there.  This will probably be the hardest part of the assignment.  Example:

I've chosen Vietnam War since I was a teenager during that time and it is very vivid to me.  I remember watching the U.S. body counts on network news every Friday night which was a chilling reminder that not only were our soldiers dying, but I couldn't imagine how many innocent Vietnamese were dying.

I notice there are three categories, Related Art, Related Film, and Related Literature.  I love to read; therefore, I decide to check out Related Literature.  I'm captured by the first entry, a woman's voice about Vietnam.  I read it.  I'm going to write about women during the Vietnam War.  I will focus on Le Ly Hayslips's point of view as a young girl of 14 who was tortured and raped.

Some questions I would think about are:

1. I'd give an overview of Le Ly Hayslip's biography.
2. Why was America in Vietnam in the first place?
3. How and why is torture and rape used by both sides to control the population? Are these human rights violations prosecuted? By whom?
4. Using Le Ly Hayslip's story, I would try to answer my question…how does one reconcile the horror, and personal pain and become an advocate for peace?

Format:

1. This paper was must be double-spaced, 12 pitch font, 1" margins all around.
2. It should be a minimum of eight pages, maximum of ten, not including the works cited page. No works cited page? I will not accept your paper and you will receive a zero grade.
2. Your G# must be in the on all pages in the upper right-hand corner.
3. Please number all your pages.
4. YOU MUST USE AT LEAST TWO PRIMARY RESOURCES.  In the case mentioned above, I could use a chapter from her autobiography. A primary resource can be an oral history, document, or diary.  Check with me if you're unsure.
5. YOU MUST USE AT LEAST TWO SECONDARY RESOURCES.
6. Please go to the Skyline College Library website to see how to document sources.  You should use the MLA format.

Your final exam, which is the oral part of this project, will be given during finals week.  More on this later.
