Sunday, May 13

  • Current Grades Posting

    • The posting reflects an adjustment of your lowest problem set score and learnsmart score to full credit (these are in orange). This is an advantage over dropping the lowest score.

    • This posting has your current course percent, based on the published syllabus scoring method, as well as an ESTIMATE of what your CURRENT adjusted percent would be IF you scored your course exam average on the final exam.

    • Lab Test #2 Options:
      • Lab Test #2 will not be administered as part of the course. On the grade posting, all students are currently recorded as 25/25. This adjusts the overall lab lest average to a value slightly higher than the course exam average, and higher than recent semester averages for lab tests in the course.
      • Alternatively, you may take Lab Test #2. If you elect to take Lab Test #2, the 25/25 will be replaced by your score/50. Please consult with me no later than Tuesday if you wish to exercise this option.

January 2011

  • Welcome to CHEM 220 - General Chemistry 2 for Science Majors! I am looking forward to a productive, challenging, and rewarding semester.  There is some important information below that I would like to share with you regarding the start of the semester.
  • Skyline College classes start Tuesday, January 17.  Our first CHEM 220 class meeting will be LABORATORY on Tuesday, January 17 at 9:10 am (AA section) or 2:10 pm (AB section) in 7-341.
    • We will discuss the syllabus, enrollment, cover important safety information that is required to participate in the lab, and have our first lab lecture.

    • It is very important that you attend your first lab session on Tuesday, January 17 and continue to attend in order to maintain your registration and waitlist priority.

    • Parking may be a challenge the first couple of weeks of classes, so I encourage you to arrive to campus early!
  • The first required LearnSmart Module and Problem Set are posted on CONNECT.
  • Science Lecture Series Assignment: A number of outside lectures will be presented at Skyline (and other instituions) throughout the semester. You will be required to attend approximately 3 lectures.
  • Academic integrity will be be taken very seriously in the course. All students are expected to act with respect and honor codes of student conduct. This topic will be addressed in detail in the first week of classes in lecture and in lab. Please scroll down on this page to read Skyline College academic honesty information.
  • Please print the handouts of the powerpoint slides on Kinetics for Wednesday's lecture. They are available on the Lecture page.
  • Course Materials:

    • Please see the SYLLABUS for a complete listing of all of the required course materials. If you took CHEM 210 at Skyline College last semester, you may not need to buy anything new.

    • The REQUIRED course textbook is CHEMISTRY, 6th Edition by Martin Silberberg.
The 5th edition of the textbook will also be supported and may be used instead of the 6th edition.
The 5th edition may be a more economical option for those of you who wish to purchase a used copy online.

    • Laboratory safety glasses or goggles and a laboratory notebook are required for the lab. These must be purchased before your second lab session on Thursday, January 19. Your prelab for the first experiment must be prepared in your lab notebook prior to that lab meeting.

    • We will be using the McGraw-Hill CONNECT online homework system for Silberberg Chemistry. Access to CONNECT is REQUIRED.

      • If you used CONNECT for CHEM 210 (or another course using Silberberg, 6th ed.) you will be able to use the same account for this course. No additional purchase is needed.

      • If you did not previously purchase CONNECT,

        • You may purchase CONNECT at the Skyline Bookstore bundled with the 6th edition of the textbook, or as a standalone (if you are purchasing the textbook separately). The bookstore standalone is ~$67.50 and includes access to the electronic version of the textbook.

        • Alternatively, you may buy online from McGraw-Hill after I have published the appropriate link for your section. If you purchase online, you will have the option of CONNECT without the electronic version of the textbook for $50.

        • A 3-week trial version of CONNECT will also be available online from the link that I will publish before class starts. If you are waitlisted, or there is a possibility that you may drop from the course in the first 2-3 weeks, I recommend the trial version.

        • Once purchused, CONNECT access is not refundable and is good for two years. It may be used in a future semester if you repeat the course or if your General Chemistry 2 instructor opts to use CONNECT, so long as it falls in that two-year window.

Academic Integrity

  • Academic integrity is a signficant issue in all academic settings, and will be taken very seriously by the instructors of this course, and the college generally.

  • The lecture and laboratory instructors will address the importance of academic honesty, and will discuss specific issues relating to academic integrity throughout the semester.

  • We recognize that most students conduct themselves with honesty and integrity. We also recognize that the actions of a few students, and the impact of those actions on other students, the course, and the college necessitate a frank and ongoing discussion of this issue.

  • Please review the student handbook information on academic integrity at the following link: http://www.skylinecollege.edu/pdf/campuslife/studenthandbook/PoliciesandProcedures.pdf

Prerequisites

  • The prerequisite for CHEM 220 is:
    • Successful completion (C or better) of CHEM 210 (General Chemistry 1) or equivalent.
  • In order to ensure that students are prepared to succeed in Organic Chemistry 2, a prerequisite check will be made for the course. A form to facilitate this process will be distributed in the lab section. Please read carefully, complete, and return to your lab instructor.

  • If you have not met the course prerequisites, you MUST file a petition to challenge the course prerequisites. You can find the process and forms at the following link: http://www.skylinecollege.edu/general/admissions/prerequisites/index.html
    • As documentation, please provide a written statement detailing your academic background or experience that has prepared you for the course. Include related science and math courses taken and grades in those courses. Letter of recommendations or official transcripts are not required at this point, but may be reqested by the dean.
    • Please turn in to the SMT division dean, in the office off the lobby of the Science Annex, Room 7-130.

  • Please speak with me if you have any questions regarding your preparation for the course, or to if you wish to discuss whether another course is better suited to your academic preparation or goals. Please also ask if you have questions about prerequisites or the petition process.
