What are Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)?

Student Learning Outcomes address learning from the student's point of view: "At the end of this course, the student will be able to ...." Thus, SLOs are explicit statements describing knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that a student will be able to demonstrate as a result of his or her engagement in a particular lesson, course, program, or college experience. A college experience is defined as a course, a program, a degree or certificate, interactions with Student Services and/or the library. Once SLOs are identified, they must be assessed. The results of the assessment will help shape changes to improve student learning. Thus, the SLO Assessment Cycle continues.
