Syllabus

Last Update August 17, 2009

Instructor:  Ms. Daisy Araica

Monday-Friday 8:10 -9:00, Rm 7-7109

Attendance:   Attendance is extremely important to any math course.   Our campus policy states that, if you are 10 minutes late, that is considered an abscence.   If you have 10 abscences you may be dropped by the instructor.   In general if you don't attend class, you usually will not pass the class.   Please take this seriously, I do not like having to enforce attendance policies.    I usually don't drop students for attendance alone unless it is obvious that you are not attending.  Ultimately, it is your responsibility to drop the course before receiving an unwanted grade.

Prerequisite:   You must have passed Math 222 or equivalent, or appropriate placement test score with a grade of C or better.

Required Textbook:   Calculus, by Deborah Hughes-Hallett, 5th edition.  We will cover chapters 1-5, however, not all sections from each chapter will be covered. Since chapter 1 is review, I will not cover much of that chapter except as needed.  The assignment sheet will contain more detailed information.

The sections covered break down into the following categories;

1.  limits and continuity,

2.  derivatives and applications

3.  differentials and antidifferentiation

4.  definite integrals

The TI-83, TI-83 plus, TI-84 or the, TI-84plus is the required calculator for this class.  No other calculator is appropriate.  Especially, keep your TI-89 and TI-92 at home.  Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class and keep them out of sight. Thank you.

Homework:    Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, this semester we will be piloting an on line homework program. The course link: www.wileyplus.com.  This link will take you straight to the login page.   Once you are registered you will have access to the homework assignments and their due dates.    If there are any adjustments I will let you know. This is new.   In addition, we will be performing group work all based on the homework assigned and that is almost always collected.

Groupwork or quizzes:  Groupwork or quizzes are given regularly.   You must show all appropriate work for credit.   Box your final answers when possible.  If groupwork is not finished during the class time, it will be due the next day.   If groupwork is handed in later than that, it automatically drops to half its worth.

Whether it is homework or groupwork or quiz each carries equal weight.  The homework or groupwork quiz with the lowest score will be dropped.

I do give opportunity for extra credit but usually these are inclass assignments and are not allowed to be taken home to receive credit.

Tests:  I will schedule approximately four exams, the assignment sheet will show the dates of each test as we get near the date of a test.  I also will say in class when exams are near.   All exams are counted with equal weight.  I DO NOT GIVE MAKE UP EXAMS but I will throw away the exam with the lowest score. It is your responsibility to be in class when a test is scheduled.

Final:  The final will be comprehensive and is never dropped.   The final is scheduled for Friday, December 18, 8:10-10:40 a.m.

Other important Dates:  The drop date to receive a refund is September 1, 2009.  The drop date for this class is November 18, 2009.  Ultimately, It is your responsibility to drop yourself before receiving an F or a D.

Note:  It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams.  You will receive a score 0% for missed quizzes, exams or the final.

StudyTime and Resources:  For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems.  I encourage you to work together with your classmates on homework.  The LearningCenter and the MesaCenter are places to get help, and to work with your classmates.   Don't wait until the end to start working.   It is too late since the information build on itself.

Accomodations:  Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accommodations.  Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentation of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

A note on CHEATING: We will follow the guidelines in the current Skyline College Student Handbook.

Grading Information

Your semester grade will be based on the following:

  1. Exams 60%

  2. GroupWork/Quizzes/Homework 15%

  3. Final 25%

Grades:   I use a standard grading curve, that is:

    A:  90% and above

    B:  80-89%

    C:  70-79%

    D:  60-69%

    F:   59% and below

Your scores will be posted regularly so you will know where you are after each test taken.  The class moves quickly and you cannot afford to allow yourself to get behind on any assignments.  You cannot afford to miss quizzes, exams or regularly scheduled group work in class.
