Syllabus

Spring 2012

Instructor:  Ms. Daisy Araica

Monday-Friday 8:10-9:00am Room 7111

Welcome to the Spring 2012 session.

Prerequisite:  Math 130 with a grade of C or better or recent high school mathematics through trigonometry and appropriate placement test score and/or other measures as appropriate.

Required Textbook:   Functions Modeling Change a preparation for calculus, by Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, Et Al, 4th edition.  We will cover sections out of chapters 1-11.  The assignment schedule has an outline of the covered sections.

Required Calculator:    The TI-83, TI-83 plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus is required for this class.  No other calculator is appropriate for this class.  Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class. Cell phones cannot be used as a substitute for a calculator during any exam.   Please bring appropriate calculators to exams.

Topics to be Covered:   We will cover the following:

1. quadratic functions

2. exponential functions

3. logarithmic functions

4. polynomial functions

5. trigonometric functions

6. rationat functions

7. transformations

8. composition of functions

9. inverse functions

10. combination of functions

11. Limits

We will cover functions from traditional formula based, as well as, from tables, graphs, and word descriptions.

Homework:   We will be using Wiley Plus for homework assignments.  You will need an access code, which can be purchased at he bookstore or at the wileyplus website.   Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, and completed on line using Wiley Plus. Homework is due on its assigned due date. Deadlines are firm-no extensions.  The on line homework will be reduced by 50% if completed after its due date. Please be sure to check dates to assure that you complete the homework before its due. Please don't wait until the last minute to complete the homework. Give yourself plenty of time to allow for possible delays.  Don't start homework at the last minute, think ahead, plan ahead. The online homework program is different then the one used for Algebra courses. Coursecompass is a multiple choice type of homewok.. Wiley is not. If you click on the link below you will be taken to the WileyPlus website. You can also access the WileyPlus website from the assignment section.

Notice that the homework and groupwork is almost equivalent to one exam. Therefore, these two items are an important component to the class grade. Pleae complete your homework in a timely manner.

When you get ready to register for the Math222 course on WileyPlus, use the URL below:

Wileyplus is currently being used in the Calculus courses here at Skyline. If you need help come and visit me during office hours. I will be glad to help you.

Groupwork:   We will have inclass assignments. The in class groupwork is always collected.  All work must be shown when appropriate. Groupwork is based on the homework.  If you do not finish the inclass work in class, it must be turned in by the next class day or it too will drop to 50% of its orginal worth.

Quizzes:   If a quiz is given you must show all appropriate work for credit.  Box your final answers when possible.  There will be no make up quizzes.

Tests:   There will be approximately four exams scheduled.  It is your responsibility to be in class when a test is scheduled.   I will drop the exam with the lowest score.   I will drop only one exam, not the final.   I do not give makeup exams.   Cell phones will not be used as a substitute for a calculator during any exam.  Please bring an appropriate calculator.

Final:    The course grade will be based on the exams, quizzes/homework/ groupwork and the final exam. The final is cumulative and never dropped.  The final is scheduled for May 25, 2012, Friday, 8:10 am-10:40am.

SLO's:   Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

-   Use algebra to solve equations, analyze functions and solve problems

-   Develop and analyze mathematical models to solve real world problems.

-   Synthesize graphical concepts to check algebraic solutions, or to find solutions where algebraic
      ones are not possible.

-   Apply their function awareness to be successful in Calculus.

Note:  It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams.

StudyTime and Resources:  For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems.  I encourage you to work together with your classmates on homework.  The Learning Center and the Mesa Center are places to get help in addition to the office hours. Don't over rely on help. You can only cut so many corners around the hard work required to be successful in this course. Just because you managed to get all the homework pints and group work points with lots of assistance does not mean you undrstand the problems. At an exam you will have to be successful without help.

Academic Integrity:  If you cheat on any exam or assignment, you will receive an immediate zero on it, and will be counted as such. Note that a zero on an exam means an instant "F" on that exam.

Accomodations:  Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accommodations.  Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentation of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

Other Important Dates:

February 17, Lincoln's Birthday - Holiday

February 20, President's Day - Holiday

March 9, Faculty Flex Day - No Classes

Apri 2 - 8, Spring Recess

Attendance:    Attendance is mandatory and extremely important to the success of this class.  If you miss more than four class days, I can elect to drop you from the course.  Please be on time.  More than 10 minutes late to the class is considered an absence. Therefore, being tardy may also be a basis or an instructor initiated drop of the student from the class roll.

I rarely drop students based on attendance alone, ultimately it is your responsibility to drop the course if necessary.

.Grading Information Your semester grade will be based on the following:

       1.         Exams 60%.

       2.         GroupWork/Quizzes 5%

       3.         Homework 10%

       4.         Final 25%

Grades:   I use a standard grading curve, that is:

A:  90% and above

B:  80-89%

C:  70-79%

D:  60-69%

F:   59% and below

I make almost no exceptions to the standard curve. Your scores will be posted regularly on my Skyline website, so you will know where you stand gradewise. I used gradekeeper to keep track of the grades. Your Grades can be accessed anytime from my Skyline website. To access your grades, just go to Skyline's Faculty pages, find me and click on the Math222 link. Then choose the grade link, and follow the prompts for gradekeeper. Gradekeeper is case sensitive and your name must be entered exactly as it appear on Admission's Records.  You will need to type in your last name, first name, and your student id.  Email me if you need help. Check your grades regularly.

The class moves quickly and you cannot afford to allow yourself to get behind on any assignments.  You cannot afford to miss quizzes, exams or regularly scheduled group work in class.

Asside, from the above, I look forward to a great semester.
