Syllabus

Instructor:  Ms. Daisy Araica

Monday-Wednesday-Friday 12:10-1:40pm

 Prerequisite:  Math 130 with a grade of C or better or recent high school mathematics through trigonometry and appropriate placement test score and other measures as appropriate.

Required Textbook:   Functions Modeling Change a preparation for calculus, by Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, Et Al, 3rd edition.  We will cover sections out of chapters 1-9.  The assignment schedule has an outline of the covered sections. The TI-83, TI-83 plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus is required for this class.  No other calculator is appropriate for this class.  Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class.

Topics to be Covered:   We will cover quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial , trigonometricand rationat functions.   Additionally, we will cover some limits, transformations, compositions, inverses and combinations of functions from a traditional formula based, as well as, from tables and graphs.

Homework:   Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, and most always collected.   I will announce in class what sections and when those homework sections will be collected.  I will also try to post the due dates on the Assignment section. The homework is listed on the Assignment section of my webpage.  

The in class groupwork is always collected. 

Quizzes:   Quizzes is usually groupwork and is conducted regularly. The groupwork is always based on the homework, so stay on top of the homework.   You must show all appropriate work for credit.  Box your final answers when possible.  There will be no make up quizzes.   I also drop the quiz with the lowest score.  Whether it is homework, group work, or quiz each carries equal weight.

Tests:   There will be approximately four to five test scheduled.   I will drop the test with the lowest score.  It is your responsibility to be in class when a test is scheduled.  I will only drop one exam.

Final:    The course grade will be based on the exams, quizzes/homework/ groupwork and the final exam.  The final is scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2009, 11:10-1:40.

Note:  It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams.  

StudyTime and Resources:  For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems.  I encourage you to work together with your classmates on homework.  The Learning Center and the Mesa Center are places to get help in addition to the office hours.

Accomodations:  Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accommodations.  Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentation of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

Attendance:   Attendance is mandatory.  If you miss more than ten class days, I can elect to drop you from the course.  Please be on time.  More than 10 minutes late to the class is considered an abscence.  Therefore, being tardy may also be a basis for an instructor initiated drop of the student from the class roll.

.Grading Information Your semester grade will be based on the following:

       1.         Exams 60%.        

       2.      GroupWork/Quizzes/Homework 15%

       3.         Final 25%

Grades:   I use a standard grading curve, that is:

A:  90% and above                       

B:  80-89%                                                  

C:  70-79%

D:  60-69%

F:   59% and below

I make almost no exceptions to the standard curve.Your scores will be posted regularly on the web, so you will know where you are after each test taken.  Just go to Skyline's Faculty pages, go to the grade link, and follow the prompts from gradekeeper.  You will need to type in your last name, first name, and your student id.  

The class moves quickly and you cannot afford to allow yourself to get behind on any assignments.  You cannot afford to miss quizzes, exams or regularly scheduled group work in class.
