Required Textbook:   Intermediate Algebra by Lehman.

Required Calculator: The TI-83, TI-83 plus, TI-84 or TI-84 plus is required for this class. No other calculator is appropriate for the class. Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class.

Topics to be Covered:    We will cover a couple of sections in chapters 1-3 and then we will begin in chapters 4-9.   Topics to be covered: Exponents and Polynomial multiplication, Factoring, Division, Rational Expressions, Radical Expressions, Quadratic Equations, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.

Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class. Please keep them out of sight. You will not be allowed to use your cell phones for calculators during class. Thank you.

Attendance:   Attendance is extremely important to any math course.   Our campus policy states that, if you are 10 minutes late, that is considered an abscence.   If you have 10 abscences you may be dropped by the instructor.   In general if you don't attend class, you usually will not pass the class.   Please take this seriously, I do not like having to enforce attendance policies.    I usually don't drop students for attendance alone unless it is obvious that you are not attending.  Ultimately, it is your responsibility to drop the course before receiving an unwanted grade.

Homework:   Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and this semester the homework will be completed online.  You must register at http://www.coursecompass.com/ and follow the student register prompts to register with the code supplied on the inside of the front cover of your book and the course ID: araica78748.  The homework for each week must be completed by Sunday night otherwise it will not be accepted.  If you have any questions please stop by for help.

In addition, the inclass group work which is based on the homework assigned is also always collected. You must show all appropriate work for credit.  Box your final answers when possible.  I will not be accepting groupwork more than three days late.

Tests:  I will give approximately five exams.   All exams are counted with equal weight.  I do not give any make up exams.  It is your responsibility to be in class when a test is scheduled.  I will drop the test with the lowest score.  Therefore, you may miss an exam without penalty.  This will be done for only one exam.

Final:  The final will be comprehensive and will be given on: Monday, December 14, 8:10-10:40 .

Note:  It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams. You will receive a score of 0% for missed quizzes or exams or the final.

Study Time and Resources:   For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems. I encourage you to work together with you classmates on homework. I often put homework or homework like problems on the test. If you find you need help the Learning Center and the Mesa Center are places to find help.

Accomodations:  Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accomodations. Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentattion of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

Other important Dates:  The drop date to receive a refund is September 1, 2009.  The drop date for this class is November 18, 2009.  Ultimately, It is your responsibility to drop yourself before receiving an F.

A note on CHEATING:   We will follow the guidelines in the current Skyline College Student Handbook.
