Syllabus

Prerequisites:    Competion of Math120 or Math123 with a grade of C or better, or appropriate placement test score and other measures as appropriate, or equivalent. Recommended: Math 115 or equivalent.

Required Textbook:   Trigonometry a Unit Circle Approach by Michael Sullivan, eghth dition.  We will cover sections.  The topics we will cover will include functions of real numbers and angles; trigongometric equations and identtities; inverse trigonometric functions; complex numbers; and applications of trigonometry.

The TI-83, TI-83,TI-84 or TI-84 plus is required for this class.  No other calculator is appropriate for this class.   Please be sure to turn off pagers and cell phones during class. Using Cell phone calculators will not be permitted in class.

Attendance:    Attendance is mandatory.  If you miss more than threer class days, I can elect to drop you from the course.  Please be on time.  Remember that 10 minutes late to class is considered an absence. Being tardy may also be a basis for an instructor initiated drop of the student from the class roll.   But, remember that official withdrawal is the responsibility of the student.

Homework:      Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, and will be collected on the dates stated in the assignment sheet.  The assignment portion of my web page gives the assigned homework.   Homework will drop one grade if late.   One day after the due date is considered late homework.   Group work is always collected and is based on the homework assigned.   If the groupwork is allowed to be taken home to finish, it is due the next day and late otherwise.   Group work is considered just like homework.  This group work cannot be made up once it has been missed.  Homework that is more than two days late will not be accepted.

Quizzes:    Generally we will not have quizzes, instead we will have group work which counts just like a quiz.  You must show all appropriate work for credit.  Box your final answers when possible.  There will be no make up quizzes.  One quiz will be dropped.

Whether it is homework, group work, or quiz, each carries equal weight.  This category is worth 20% of the grade.

Tests:    I will give approximately two exams and a final.   I will not drop any exam.   I DO NOT GIVE ANY MAKE UP EXAMS.   The exams are worth 50% of the grade.   If you miss an exam, 70% of the score of your final exam will be used for the missing test.   This can only be done for one exam.

Final:   The final is the last exam, and is scheduled for the Thursday, July 9, 2009.   The final is cumulative and carries more weight than regular exams.  The final is worth 30% of the grade.

Note:   It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams.  You will receive a score 0% for missed quizzes or exams, except as noted above for one missing exam.

Study Time and Resources:  For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems.  I encourage you to work together with your classmates on homework.  The Learning Center and the Mesa Center are places to get help, and to work with your classmates.

Accommodations:   Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accommodations.  Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentation of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

CHEATING:   Don’t cheat – no math problem is worth being thrown out of class or possibly out of school.

Grading Information

Your semester grade will be based on the following:

1. Exams-50%

2. Group work/quizzes-20%

3. Final-30%

Grades:   I use a standard grading curve, that is:

A:  90% and above

B:  80-89%

C:  70-79%

D:  60-69%

F:   59% and below

Your scores will be posted regularly on the web, so you will know where you stand after each test taken.  Just go to the grade dot on the web site.   At the prompt from grade book, type in your last name, followed by a comma, first name and your student id.

The class moves quickly and you cannot afford to allow yourself to get behind on any assignments.  You cannot afford to miss quizzes, exams or regularly scheduled group work in class. The Learning Center and perhaps the Mesa center are two different places to find help with your homework, in addition to the instructor's office hours.
