Welcome to the Spring 2012 semester.

Prerequisite: You must have passed Math 110 or Math 112 with a grade of C or better.

Required Textbook:   Elelmentary and Intermediate Algebra by Jay Lehman.

Required Calculator:   The TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus is the required calculator for this class. Cell phones will not be allowed to be used during exams as a substitue for calculators.

Topics to be Covered:    We will cover a couple of sections in chapters 8-13.

Topics to be covered:

1. Exponents and Properties

2. Polynomial Functions

3. Rational Expressions,

4. Radical Expressions

5. Quadratic functions

6. Exponential Functions

7. Logarithmic Functions

Attendance:   Attendance is extremely important to any math course.   Our campus policy states that, if you are 10 minutes late, that is considered an abscence.  If you have 10 abscences you may be dropped by the instructor, if the class meets daily.   In general if you don't attend class, it is difficult to pass the course. Please take this seriously, I do not like having to enforce attendance policies. I usually don't drop students for attendance alone.  Ultimately, it is your responsibility to drop the course before receiving an unwanted grade

Classroom Behavior:    Students enrolled at Skyline College are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.  Any student may be subject to disciplinary action, if his/her conduct is disruptive or in violation of college rules and regulations.  Any student who refuses to leave a classroom when requested to do so by the professor is subject to disciplinary action. Please turn of cell phones and pagers. Cell-phone can not be used during exams as a calculator. Please leave your cell phones off and put away.

Homework:   Homework will be assigned regularly. This semester the homework will be completed online using course compass.  You must register at  http://www.coursecompass.com/ and follow the student register prompts to register with the code supplied on the inside of the front cover of your book. You will also need the course id which is

araica15662

Check coursecompass for homework due dates.  You are responsible for timely completion. Please allow yourself plenty of time to complete the homework. Don't start the homework at the last minute. Allow for the possibilities like computer problems, etc. Once the due date passes, coursecompass will allow you to complete the homework, but you will be penalized by receiving only 50% of the grade on the particular homework that is completed past the due date.

Groupwork and Quizzes: In addition, we will have in class group work which is based on the homework assigned and it iis also always collected. You must show all appropriate work for credit.  Box your final answers when possible.  I will not be accepting groupwork more than three days late.  Late homework will recieve a reduced score of 50%. Quizzes when given are always collected and graded.

Tests:  I will give approximately four exams.   All exams are counted with equal weight.  I do not give any make up exams.  It is your responsibility to be in class when a test is scheduled.  I will drop the test with the lowest score.  Therefore, you may miss an exam without penalty.  This will be done for only one exam.

Final:  The final will be comprehensive and will be given on:

Monday, May 23, 2012 11:10-1:40 in 7111.

SLO:   Through real world applications, students will be able to create, manipulate and interpret mathematical models of relationships involving linear, exponential, polynomial, radical and rational functions.

Note:  It is your responsibility to be present and on time to all quizzes and exams. You will receive a score of 0% for missed quizzes or exams or the final.

Study Time and Resources:   For each hour in class, you should spend at least 2-4 hours outside of class reading the text, reviewing your notes, and working problems. I encourage you to work together with you classmates on homework. I often put homework or homework like problems on the test. If you find you need help the Learning Center and the Mesa Center are places to find help. Also, I have office hours daily.

Accomodations:  Students with documented learning and/or physical disabilities may receive reasonable classroom and/or testing accomodations. Please make these arrangements with me as soon as possible after proper documentattion of the disability has been determined by the DSP unit here at Skyline.

Other important Dates:  The drop date to receive a refund is January 30, 2012.  The drop date for this class is April 26, 2012.  Ultimately, It is your responsibility to drop yourself before receiving an F.

A note on CHEATING:   We will follow the guidelines in the current Skyline College Student Handbook.
